Purpose of Position:
Why does the job exist?
The Department of Public Safety (DPS) is recruiting for Non-Certified Dispatcher I candidates who will receive on-the-job training to become fully certified police dispatchers. These positions are located statewide to support the various New Mexico State Police District offices.

How does it get done?
Trained and certified Dispatchers' responsibilities are to operate a complex multi channel radio console, computerized telephone and teletype equipment that provides communication to local law enforcement agencies, to answer and assist emergency and non-emergency calls, and direct those calls to appropriate law enforcement personnel.

Who are the customers?
The customers are New Mexico State Police, other law enforcement agencies and the general public.

Ideal candidate is self-motivated, reliable, enthusiastic, and empathetic. Will have the ability to make well informed, effective and quick decisions and perceive the impact of those decisions. The candidate will effectively communicate verbally and in writing. Will perform as team players and will be able to work in close proximity with other dispatchers. Above all, the ideal candidate will understand the significance of this position and how it relates to the community and officers.

This position is a Pay Band 40.

Due to the available budget allocated for this position, the hiring rate will not exceed $14.25 per hour.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED.

Employment Requirements:
This position is designated a safety sensitive. Employment is subject to pre-employment and random testing, in accordance with all terms and conditions of federal and state law, rules and regulations in relation to alcohol and/or drug testing. Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License.

Statutory Requirements:
Upon selection by the Public Safety or Department of Information Technology, a background clearance will be required.

  • Upon application or admission to the New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy, applicants will be required to successfully complete the New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy Basic Radio Dispatch Training Program within one year of employment, and incumbents of the Department of Public Safety must maintain certification currency.
  • Upon application or admission to the New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy, applicants will be required to pass a hearing test.
  • Upon selection by the Information Technology or Transportation Departments, applicants will be required to obtain Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.
  • Must be a citizen or legal resident of the United States.
  • Must not have been convicted of a felony or other crime involving moral turpitude.

Working Conditions:
Work is performed in 24/7 Law enforcement office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and telephone usage with extended periods of sitting. Ability to lift up to 25 pounds. Irregular hours, overtime, swing shifts, graveyard shifts, weekends and/or holidays shifts are required. Minimal travel may be required.
