Job Description

Purpose of Position:
Why does the job exist?
This position is responsible for operating a complex multichannel radio console, computerized telephone and teletype equipment that provides communication to local law enforcement agencies, for answering and assisting emergency and non-emergency calls and directing those calls to appropriate law enforcement personnel. Hired dispatchers will be paid relative to their total years of experience as a CERTIFIED dispatcher.

Dispatching emergency calls.

Who are the customers?
The customers are New Mexico State Police, other law enforcement agencies and the general public.

Ideal candidate is self-motivated, reliable, enthusiastic, and empathetic. Will have the ability to make well informed, effective and quick decisions and perceive the impact of those decisions. The candidate will effectively communicate verbally and in writing. Will perform as team players and will be able to work in close proximity with other dispatchers. Above all, the ideal candidate will understand the significance of this position and how it relates to the community and officers.

This position is a Pay Band 50.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED and one (1) year police and/or emergency dispatch experience.

Employment Requirements:
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Employment is subject to pre-employment background investigation and random drug test and is conditional pending results. This position is designated as safety sensitive. Employment is subject to pre-employment and random testing, in accordance with all terms and conditions of federal and state law, rules and regulations in relation to alcohol and/or drug testing. Employment requires successful completion of post criminal background check and is conditional pending results of criminal background check.

Statutory Requirements:
Upon selection by the Public Safety or Department of Information Technology, a background clearance will be required.

  • Upon application or admission to the New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy, applicants will be required to successfully complete the New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy Basic Radio Dispatch Training Program within one year of employment, and incumbents of the Department of Public Safety must maintain certification currency.
  • Upon application or admission to the New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy, applicants will be required to pass a hearing test.
  • Upon selection by the Information Technology or Transportation Departments, applicants will be required to obtain Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.
  • Must be a citizen or legal resident of the United States.
  • Must not have been convicted of a felony or other crime involving moral turpitude.

Working Conditions:
Work is performed in 24/7 Law enforcement office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and telephone usage with extended periods of sitting. Irregular hours, overtime, swing shifts, graveyard shifts, weekends and/or holidays shifts are required. Minimal travel may be required.
