Description

Position Summary:
Interns will gain experience working in municipal government, including working with managers, division directors and other staff on a regular basis.

Position Scope:
Internships are designed to provide interns with hands-on experience in local government, including research experience and assisting with project development within the designated departments. Interns will also gain valuable experience working in a professional office environment.

 

Illustrative Examples of Essential Duties

Interns will perform tasks as assigned by Department Director or supervisor, including but not limited to:

  • Interns assigned to the Finance Department will have the opportunity to develop government accounting and finance experience through assisting with routine daily/weekly/monthly departmental tasks including accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash receipts, fixed assets, payroll, and purchasing; assisting with preparation of the City's financial reports, reconciliations, analysis, annual budget and year end audit.
  • Assisting in research and the preparation of various reports and working papers and performing a variety of analytical work and/or reconciliation of detail transactions as assigned by supervisor or Department Director.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to show relevant course work in accounting.
  • Ability to analyze detail transactions and learn reconciliation processes.
  • Ability to conduct research and prepare clear and concise reports and analysis.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to communicate in a professional, friendly and tactful manner.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, government officials, representatives of other agencies, and the general public.
  • Knowledge of personal computers and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Ability to pay close attention to details.

Minimum Requirements

Required Education & Experience:

  • Have completed basic college-level accounting courses and be in the process of completing some higher college-level courses in Accounting.
  • Accounting majors preferred. Finance, Business Administration, Public Administration majors will be considered if appropriate accounting coursework has been completed.
