If you answered yes, the Department of Labor and Industries may have the job for you!  Our Information Security Services Office is seeking an expert-level Security Engineer to help safeguard our confidential data and protect our systems and data. As an IT Specialist 5, Security Engineer, you will be providing purpose and producing meaningful work through the implementation of new technologies to protect injured workers information.
 
This position provides growth and new challenges to the future incumbent; as an ITS5 you will analyze technology solutions and identify necessary controls to mitigate risk. This is your opportunity to share your knowledge by providing consultation and guidance to other IT professionals and business areas. You will also perform security audits, provide vulnerability assessment, manage technical contracts that support agency wide compliance in the privacy and security of the agency's data, and use the latest security tools and utilities to make a difference.
 
What needs to be done first
 
Learn and understand L&I and WA State security policies and standards quickly. This understanding will provide the framework for security analysis and allow the ideal candidate to hit the ground running.
 

  • Manage efforts to implement one or more security technologies from our roadmap. e.g. SIEM, Web Application Firewall, Intrusion Detection/Prevention Systems, Security Event and Incident systems and others.
  • Lead security remediation efforts based on existing gap analysis, developing a plan to resolve issues and maintain communication, working with customers to validate proposed solutions that meet agency security policies and standards.
  • Provide security guidance to customers, staying abreast of emerging technologies and methods.
 
 
Some of what you will do
 
  • Provide expert-level Security Engineering responsibilities for security technologies.
  • Conduct security reviews and process and establish security requirements. Assess data classification and set security requirements.
  • Provide security consultation for business areas and technical groups. Translate technical security concepts; analyze business areas and technical group proposals to identify appropriate security requirements.
  • Perform security and risk assessments, vulnerability scans and network discovery scans.
  • Share in the responsibilities with all ISSO staff in establishing and updating IS Security policies, Standards and Procedures.
  • Lead, consult, and support other staff including technical specialists, business stakeholders, and contract staff involved with IS security processes and technologies.
  • Conduct the L&I ISSO's Security Review process to establish security requirements for business and technical groups involved n development efforts that result in new, or significantly changed, computer systems, environments and infrastructure.
 
 
Required experience
 
Four years of IT experience with at least one (1) year working with 2 or more of the following security technologies; firewall management, intrusion detection and prevention, application and network scanning, digital forensics, patch management, anti-Virus and malware management, or IT project management;
 
OR 

A Bachelors Degree in Information Technology (or relevant field) and two (2) years of professional IT experience with one (1) year working with the following security technologies; firewall management, intrusion detection and prevention, application and network scanning, digital forensics, patch management, anti-Virus and malware management, or IT project management

  • Experience with security domains, regulatory mandates (PCI, OCIO, FISMA, SOX, HIPPA), Project management, security assessments/audits, confidentiality reviews, client server, Windows, Unix, IIS, group policy, TCP/IP, application security, desktop security, server security, Identity & Access Management, Internet content filtering, digital certificates, anti-Virus, and anti-Spam.
  • Current professional experience performing relevant and transferrable job functions.
  • Demonstrated growth and self-improvement in learning new technologies, throughout career.
  • Demonstrated experience resolving challenging and complex security problems.
  • Ability to assess and ensure compliance with IT security policies and standards.
  • Decisive self-starter with the ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple responsibilities.

Insurance Benefits

Retirement and Deferred Compensation

Employees also have the ability to participate in the Deferred Compensation Program (DCP).  This is a supplemental retirement savings program (similar to an IRA) that allows you control over the amount of pre-tax salary dollars you defer as well as the flexibility to choose between multiple investment options.
 
Vacation (Annual Leave)
 
You begin accruing vacation starting your first month of employment. Since we value your loyalty, the amount of vacation you can accrue increases the longer you work with us. Washington State supports members of the armed forces with 21 days paid military leave per year. Vacation accrues for full-time employees per WAC 357-31-165.
