Position Summary

The award-winning Brooklyn Park Recreation and Parks Department is looking for highly motivated, team-oriented and enthusiastic individuals who have a desire to make difference in Brooklyn Park by instructing/coaching tennis classes. A tennis instructor will plan the lesson curriculum and lead tennis classes for youth and will work under the general supervision of the Program Supervisor. This position will be primarily working evening hours between 8:00 am – 12:30 pm and 5:00 – 9:00 p.m., Monday-Thursday in June and July.

A Tennis Instructor is a member of the Recreation and Parks staff team that works together to develop innovative service delivery methods and programs focused on quality partnerships, service to our community and achieving successful results.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate sports skills competently
  • Maintain order and assure participants are following set lesson plans and program policies
  • Promote the sports program through positive relationships with participants and parents
  • Communicate effectively with participants and parents
  • Report to assigned location on time
  • Report any incidents and assist with completing the required report

Minimum and Desired Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • 18 years of age or older
  • Previous experience leading tennis classes/camps or head coaching in tennis with a strong knowledge of the game
  • Ability to interact with participants and parents in a responsible and professional manner
  • Ability to communicate effectively and respond with tact and courtesy
  • Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision
  • Ability to effectively work with youth and parents
  • Ability to make rational and appropriate decisions based on established policy and procedure
  • Ability to maturely and appropriate respond to any emergency or incident that may arise
  • Ability to maintain order and security
  • Ability to provide a level of customer service that meets/exceeds customer expectation and satisfaction
  • Ability to professionally exhibit cultural sensitivity, patience, and understanding in the course of work duties Ability to relate to and work with individuals representing a variety of diverse backgrounds and cultures

Desired Qualifications
  • Three (3)+ years of experience  lead teaching or head coaching tennis
  • Significant experience successfully working with youth and providing customer service
  • Previous experience working with diverse populations
  • Fluency in Spanish, Hmong, Russian, Somali or Vietnamese

Additional Information

Anticipated Work Schedule: This is a seasonal position that will work less than 30 hours per week; work shifts will primarily be evening hours from 8:00 am – 12:30 pm and 5:00 – 9:00 p.m., Monday-Thursday in the months of June and July.

Anticipated Hiring Wage: $15.00 - $20.50

Job Class: Specialist I and II       Pay Grade: (672-673) $14.50 - $23.00, depending on qualifications
 

Regular, full-time City of Brooklyn Park employees (30 or more hours per week) are eligible for a benefits package including:
