The LA School for the Deaf is seeking applicants for an ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL

The Louisiana Schools for the Deaf and Visually Impaired is a 24 hour facility.  The Assistant Principal works in conjunction with the LSD Residential program.   This is a FULL TIME,  11 MONTH position (8 hours daily) but some overtime/weekend work may be required.  

*Applicants with American Sign Language skills preferred.  Please note:  must obtain Advanced Plus SLPI within 2 years of hire date.*

Physical Activity Level
Some work is performed in physically comfortable positions with little or light physical effort, and some work requires moderate effort.  Lifting thirty to forty pounds may be required and brief periods of heavy muscular exertion may be required.  Interpreting/ and transliterating require extended use of the upper body muscles and fine motor movements of the hands.  Physical requirements are subject to reasonable accommodation in accordance with ADA standards.

Qualifications

 

  1. A Master's degree with a background and experience in the education of the deaf is preferred.   Must have at least five years professional educational experience, three of which must have been experience in a school or educational program serving deaf students.  Experience at a residential school is preferred. 
  2. Must meet the certification requirements of the State of Louisiana as a teacher with hearing impaired endorsement and as a school principal.  Possession and presentation of Conference of Executives of American Schools for the Deaf/Council on Education of the Deaf (CEASD/CED) certification will satisfy the Louisiana requirement for hearing impaired endorsement on the teaching certificate.
  3. Must possess human relations and management skills with which to develop and maintain a cohesive common purpose faculty and to direct the functions of subordinates.
  4. Preference will be given to applicants possessing sign language skills; others must be willing to learn such skills.  The minimum acceptable Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI) level for effective job performance is Advanced Plus.
  5. Must obtain hearing impaired endorsement within three (3) years of hire date if not hearing impaired certified at the time of hire.

The assistant principal is responsible for assisting the Principal, LSD in the effective management and operation of programs, personnel, materials, and facilities in order to develop an optimum learning climate for the unique needs of the assigned school program through planning, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating functions of the overall management and leadership of the school.  He/she shall assist in providing an educational program, which is responsive to student needs and one that addresses the goals and objectives of the school within the financial limitations of the schools budget.  The following responsibilities reflect the Louisiana Standards for Principals in Louisiana, 1998.
 
I.     Vision

  • Works collaboratively with the school community to develop and maintain a shared school vision
  • Brings the school vision to life by using it to guide decision making about students and the instructional program
  • Maintains faculty focus on developing learning experiences that will enable students to prosper in subsequent grades and as adults
  • Maintains open communication with the school community and effectively conveys high expectations for student learning to the community
  • Assists in providing opportunities and support for collaboration, the exchange of ideas, experimentation with innovative teaching strategies, and ongoing school improvement
  • Assists in monitoring, assessing, and revising the school vision and goals as needed

II.    Teaching and Learning
  • Recognizes, models, and promotes effective teaching strategies that enable students to apply what they learn to real world experiences
