THIS RECRUITMENT IS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC
The eligible list established through this recruitment will be used to fill current and future Assistant Plant Operating Engineer positions within OC Public Works.

THE OPPORTUNITY
 
OC Public Works has an exciting opportunity for an Assistant Plant Operating Engineer to work in the Central Utility Facility Unit, responsible for supplying steam for heating and chilled water for cooling to the County, City, State and Federal buildings in the Santa Ana Civic Center Complex. Under close supervision, incumbents assist in operating gas turbines and steam generators as well as a central refrigeration plant; inspect, maintain and make mechanical repairs on all types of equipment involved in the production of steam and chilled water; and perform other Central Plant work as required.


 
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS AND CORE COMPETENCIES

The ideal candidate will possess a steam plant and EPA refrigerant equipment license, have knowledge of chillers,absorbers operations, and water chemistry principles. In addition, the ideal candidate possesses experience in Utilities and Public Works trades such as electrical, plumbing, mechanical or welding and plant or Public Works trades experience.

The ideal candidates will also possess the competencies below:

TECHNICAL SKILLS
Have an ability to read, write, and interpret blueprints instructions and diagrams. Perform Steam Plant Operations, Refrigeration Plant Operations, and Standard Water Treatment Chemicals. Demonstrate knowledge of SCADA system (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition), CEMS (Continuous Emission Monitoring Systems), Mechanical aptitude, Heat Transfer & Combustion Principles. Understand Lock Out Tag and how to properly de-energize equipment.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS
Effectively communicate with supervisors, engineers, craft works and the public. As well as, being able to communicate with City, State and Federal Agencies; produce clear and concise written documents and records; maintain accurate computer logs and energy management systems.

SAFETY FOCUS
Ability to observe safety practices working with high pressure steam and heavy mechanical equipment; take a proactive approach to fostering a safe work environment; identify, report and correct unsafe working conditions and/or equipment in an efficient and timely manner; respond quickly to emergency conditions with boilers and auxiliary equipment; understand Lock Out Tag Out program.

ANALYTICAL SKILLS
Ability to apply reasoning and judgment in diagnosing mechanical faults and choosing best method of repair; understand date and record readings and test results accurately; identify important details with equipment; identify areas for improvement and seeks creative solutions; act as an effective troubleshooter.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS 

 Regularly bend, stoop, squat, turn and climb; distinguish colors; may be required to lift and carry up to 50 pounds. May be required to work in confined space, on elevated platforms and to climb 50 foot ladders and stairwells.
