The Department of Corrections is seeking a highly motivated and qualified individual for the position of Dentist for the Washington State Penitentiary located in Walla Walla, WA. This is a day shift Monday- Friday with weekends and holidays off.
 
Washington State Penitentiary (WSP) is a 2000 bed facility for high and medium custody men. It is located just outside the city, farms and vineyards of Walla Walla.  Four separate facilities exist within the institution, each of which houses a different custody level of offender. 

WSP underwent some major facility construction; replacing old facilities with newer high custody housing units. WSP opened a new stand alone health care building with inpatient and outpatient medical and mental health care and a six chair dental operatory.

Responsibilities

The Dentist provides medically necessary dental services to offenders housed in Department of Corrections facilities. Under the direct supervision of the Health Care Manager I, the Dentist supports the mission of DOC through personal delivery of dental care to adult patients. As directed by the Health Care Authority, provides dental services to the offender population as assigned in accordance with acceptable professional standards, federal and state regulations and institution and Department of Corrections policies/procedures:

  • Makes oral examination of patients to determine oral health
  • Extracts teeth, removes cavities from teeth; prepares teeth for fillings and inserts filling material;
  • Diagnoses and treats pathological conditions; prescribes medication for treatment of diseases of dental nature; renders periodontal treatments; administers local or general anesthetic; takes and processes dental radiographs;
  • Gives instruction and promotes dental care and hygiene among patients.

Qualifications

Doctor's degree  DDS or DMD from an accredited school of dentistry,
AND
A valid unencumbered Washington State license to practice dentistry,
AND
Possession of unrestricted DEA registration to prescribe controlled substances.

Preferred:
Two years clinical experience in the practice of dentistry.
Experience and/or education in working with medical/dental documents, maintaining or processing health/dental records and using dental terminology,
Knowledge in the areas of scheduling routine/special dental procedures and patient visits.
Demonstrated proficiency in computer applications and related technologies.

Retirement and Deferred Compensation

Vacation (Annual Leave)
