Description/Duties & Responsibilities

The City of Santa Clarita has a part-time, temporary, and seasonal (PTS) position available in vehicle maintenance responsible for performing preventative maintenance inspections and servicing of City fleet vehicles. This position also assists journey-level mechanics and performs related duties as assigned.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Performs preventative maintenance safety inspections of automobiles, trucks, trailers, and off-road equipment

• Changes motor oil, transmission fluids, drive axle gear oil, hydraulic fluid, oil filters, air and fuel filters, coolant and thermostat, etc.

• Tests batteries and vehicle charging systems. Charges and replaces batteries.

• Repairs tires and tubes; installs and balances new tires

• Performs minor electrical and lighting system repairs and miscellaneous minor repairs such as brake adjustment, automatic transmission service and band adjustment, replaces fan belts and all types of hoses, etc.

• Services, inspects and makes minor repairs of off-road vehicles in the field when required

• Operates shop machinery

• Fuel and wash City pool vehicles

• Pick up and deliver parts and supplies at/to local vendors

• Maintain shop cleanliness and steam clean parts and vehicles

• Assists mechanics as required

• Maintains accurate automotive service and repair order forms

• Performs other tasks as the job requires

Education and Experience

• High School Diploma or GED Certificate. (proof will be required if hired)

• One year of experience in performing routine maintenance and repairs of vehicles and equipment.

• Valid California Driver's License with safe driving record.

• Successful candidate will be required to provide and maintain his/her own set of tools to be used at work. The tools should include, but are not limited to, both standard and metric hand tools and pneumatic tools, with an inventory sufficient to complete daily tasks and work assignments. A tool box (rolling preferred) is also required. The City will provide a locked cage to secure the tool box when not in use.

Knowledge and Abilities

• Basic operations and maintenance of vehicles and components; use and maintenance of basic shop, hand and power tools such as ratchets, sockets, hand wrenches, screw drivers, torque wrenches, pneumatic power tools, grease guns, steam cleaner, tire changer and balancer, electric paint buffing machine and automotive upholstery cleaning machine, and other related tools; types and grades of lubricants, coolants, brake, steering and other fluids used in automotive and equipment servicing; use and maintenance of tire changing and balancing equipment; knowledge of process to polish exterior automotive paint finishes, clean automotive upholstery, safe working practices and safety equipment related to work.

Part-time, temporary, and seasonal (PTS) workers are at-will. Generally PTS employees are limited to no more than 1,000 hours.

In addition, PTS employees will be required to participate in the DMV Employer Pull-Notice Program. This program authorizes the City to receive a driver record report upon enrollment and during employment.
