The Opportunity: 
WSDOT has a unique opportunity for an experienced Landscape Architect to join our team in Shoreline!
 
This role would work closely with the NWR Principal Landscape Architect to balance complex competing needs and priorities of the roadside across multiple regions/programs in King, Snohomish, Whatcom, Skagit and Island counties on the NW Region transportation program, Gateways program, SR 405 Program, SR 520 program, SR 99 Viaduct Replacement program, Sound Transit and Ferries.
 
The Assistant Landscape Architect will focus on strategically managing Puget Sound Area roadside policies, issues, programs, and services to promote transportation safety and efficiency, to preserve and restore the natural and cultural environment, and to affect the visual harmony and compatibility of functions for sustainable roadsides.
 
As a registered Landscape Architect, this position will perform senior level professional landscape architectural work, independently making decisions that are both strategic and tactical to meet policy, program and organizational needs/ requirements.
 
This position will perform the following work:

  • Interpret policies, guidance and procedures regarding the roadside and mitigation for the Puget Sound Area.
  • Provide expertise during  project scoping regarding  treatment type/level and estimated costs
  • Oversee design and professionally stamp roadside restoration and environmental mitigation plans and specifications in the absence of the Principal Landscape Architect
  • Approve consultant work for roadside restoration and environmental mitigation and authorize consultant payments
  • Guide and approve proposals by non-WSDOT interests to meet roadside policy, public art policy requirements, etc.
  • Develop and approve aesthetic treatment standards for corridors/projects (such as wall texture and color, luminaire style and color, etc.)
  • Oversee management of funds for Plant Establishment Program and Vegetation Mitigation Program
  • Approve Visual Quality Discipline report as part of environmental documentation in the absence of the Principal Landscape Architect
  • Continuously monitor and improve site/work condition safety for site/work; facilitate identification of hazards and safety concerns, preparation of Pre-Activity Safety Plans, and participation by staff in resolution/improvements for safe site/work conditions
  • Facilitate resolution for emergent issues through coordination with managers, HQ staff and others and develop/update standard practices, standard specifications, standard plans and region special provisions
  • Identify upcoming business needs, and mentor/grow staff to meet needs
  • Other duties as assigned
 
Requirements:
  • A bachelor's degree in Landscape Architecture or a Bachelor of Science with an emphasis in Landscape Architecture
  • Registration as a Landscape Architect in the State of Washington
  • Five (5) or more years of experience in the analysis and evaluation of environmental issues and problems; A Master's degree in a related field will substitute for one year of the required experience OR minimum 1 year of experience as a TPS 4 or equivalent
  • Valid Driver's license
 
Our ideal candidate shall have:
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local policies, goals, regulations, and procedures related to implementation of roadside and environmental policies
  • Proven familiarity with Landscape Architecture principles and practice, from planning, scoping, design, construction, through maintenance
  • Experience with natural and cultural resource preservation and management as it relates to transportation project development
  • Experience with construction and design practices related to plants, soils, grading, drainage, erosion control, stormwater quality treatment and soil bioengineering
  • Understanding of requirements for successful mitigation and environmental design and construction
  • Familiarity with roadside safety and related highway design guidance and standards, contract preparation, and related construction practices, materials and methods
  • Strong familiarity with Microsoft Office products for analysis, presentation and publication
  • Proven ability to establish clear goals, and identify and communicate steps to make progress and achieve goals
  • The ability to work outdoors, traverse uneven ground and perform field investigative work; sometimes in inclement weather
  • Ability to work collaboratively with managers and staff; manage staff and program performance

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Pesticide Consultant License
  • Certified Erosion and Sediment Control License
  • Experience supervising and leading professional and technical staff

Retirement and Deferred Compensation
