Job Responsibilities

Under general supervision, maintains the domestic water system, sanitary sewer system, steam piping system, hot water heating system, and any other systems related to equipment for Whitten Center.

1. Makes repairs as needed to remedy routine and emergency plumbing problems. Uses sewer tapes and augers, unstops commodes and sewer lines. Uses special plumbing equipment to cut roots from main lines. Requires handling dirty, heavy sewer equipment, getting into manholes, crawling under buildings and climbing into attics and on roofs.

2. Replaces and repairs worn and aged fixtures, fittings, and pipe. Requires working with very heavy and bulky pipe. Uses special plumbing tools to fit pipe and prepare for replacement. May require use of ladder to get into attic space or climb into deep manholes.

3. Performs preventative maintenance on sanitary sewer lines using specialized equipment. Services, repairs, and operates special sewer equipment used to cut roots and grease out of main sewer lines. Uses power augers to free obstructed secondary sewer lines. Requires ability to understand, operate, and repair mechanical equipment. Can possibly require moving heavy equipment by hand.

4. Installs new plumbing and heating systems in new buildings and renovations as they are constructed by Maintenance Department. Requires reading blue prints and understanding the principles of sound plumbing. Utilizing various power and hand tools. Installs heavy and/or bulky pipe and fixtures.

5. Maintains in proper working order and good repair the specialized equipment and tools utilized in the plumbing/pipefitting trade. Understanding electric and gasoline engines is advantageous.

6. Performs other related duties as required. 

Minimum and Additional Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent. Must have 3 years of trade experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Must possess South Carolina licensure/certification as a plumber. Must be able to read plumbing section of blue prints and equipment schematics.
