DESCRIPTION

The City of Torrance Community Services Department is is seeking two (2) creative individuals to join their Cultural Services team as an Instructor I (Ceramics)!  One of the positions will be teaching fundamentals to adults and the other position will be for youth instruction, ages 3-17.
 
With a fully equipped ceramic studio in the Torrance Cultural Arts Center, classes through the Cultural Services Division have been a hub in the South Bay.  Youth and adults learn skills and techniques to build a foundation in ceramics.

Under supervision, the Ceramic Instructor I is responsible for developing classes for beginning through advanced students.  Curriculum techniques include hand-building, glazing and throwing on the potter's wheel using high-fire clay, teaching safety protocols and preparing lesson plans in weekly, eight – ten week quarters.
 
Job Duties & Responsibilities
The following duties represent the principal job duties; however, they are not all inclusive.
  • Prepares lesson plans;
  • Provides instruction in beginning to advanced ceramic skills;
  • Provides instruction in applications of textural effects;
  • Routine cleaning of equipment and studio;
  • Works with ceramic lab technicians for glazing materials and firing;
  • Interfaces with the public and other personnel;
  • Provides the class description information to Cultural Services Division staff by set deadlines, for inclusion in City publications, and various media outlets;
  • Begins and ends all classes on time;
  • Adheres to payroll policies and procedures, such as signing in and out, and filing out time cards by certain deadlines;
  • Perform other duties as required.

Hours: 
This is a recurrent, part-time, non-civil service, as needed position. Hours are varied, 9:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience
Any combination of education and experience that provides the knowledge and abilities required is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Five years of experience teaching the equivalent of four semester courses per year.  Four of the five years may be substituted by possession of a relevant degree from a college, university, or specialized school.  Significant recognized ranking in the field may be substituted for four years of the required experience.

No specific minimum of education.

Ideal Candidate:
In addition to the minimum qualifications, the ideal candidate will:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Fine Arts or Craft Studies preferred;
  • Knowledge of Ceramic materials-clay, glazes, slips, molds--equipment, tools and procedures;
  • Knowledge of Fundamental elements and principles of cone 10 clay; forming, firing and glazing;
  • Ability to accurately instruct in both Low Fire and High Fire techniques;
  • Proficient in both Hand-Building and Wheel Throwing;
  • Knowledge of basic first aid and Safety procedures that are in compliance with Best Practices and MSDS requirements;
  • Strong verbal and teaching skills to communicate to a variety of culturally diverse students;
  • Experience and interest in working with adult students of various ages and abilities.

Health Insurance (sec. 4.6)
Employee working more than 30 hours per week on a regular basis over 12 months will receive one-party part-time health coverage ($248.84).

Holidays (Sec 4.4)
Holiday pay of four (4) hours for Christmas Day (Dec. 25), New Year's Day (Jan. 1), Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday, and Veteran's Day. 
*To be eligible, employee MUST work at least 12 hours during pay period in which holiday falls.
 
Bereavement Leave (sec 4.2)
