DESCRIPTION

The City of Torrance Community Services Department is currently accepting applications for an Instructor II (Drawing/Visual Arts) with the Cultural Services Division!

With state of the art, visual arts studios in the Torrance Cultural Arts Center, classes through the Cultural Services Division have been a hub in the South Bay.  Youth and adults learn skills to build a foundation in cartooning, drawing and painting with a variety of media.

Under supervision, the Drawing/Visual Arts Instructor II will teach the fundamentals of drawing, cartooning, and anime with additional visual arts instruction as required. They are responsible for preparing lesson plans and instructing 2-dimensional visual arts classes in weekly, eight – ten week quarters.
 
Job Duties & Responsibilities
The following duties represent the principal job duties; however, they are not all inclusive.
  • Prepares lesson plans;
  • Provides quality instruction in beginning and advanced drawing techniques, for youth 8-17 years as well as adults;
  • Supervises and ensures the safety of youth and adults in programs at all times using positive classroom management and discipline techniques;
  • Routine set-up and cleaning of studio;
  • Creates supply lists for supervisor;
  • Interfaces with the public, parents, supervisors and other personnel;
  • Provides the class description information to Cultural Services Division staff by set deadlines, for inclusion in City publications, and various media outlets;
  • Assists with promotion of classes and participates in an annual Open House;
  • Begins and ends all classes on time;
  • Adheres to payroll policies and procedures, such as signing in and out and filling out time cards by certain deadlines;
  • Assists with promotion of classes and participates in City Events;
  • Perform other duties as required.

Hours: 
This is a recurrent, part-time, non-civil service, as needed position. Hours are varied, 9:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience
Any combination of education and experience that provides the knowledge and abilities required is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Ten years of experience teaching the equivalent of four semester courses per year.  Four of the ten years may be substituted by possession of a relevant degree from a college, university, or specialized school.   Possession of a master's degree would substitute for an additional three years experience.  Significant recognized ranking in the field may be substituted for four years of the required experience.

No specific minimum of education.

Ideal Candidate:
In addition to the minimum qualifications, the ideal candidate will:

  • Master's Degree in Fine Arts or Visual Arts Studies preferred;
  • Knowledge of materials and media used to instruct drawing and painting techniques;
  • Strong verbal and teaching skills to communicate to a variety of culturally diverse students;
  • Experience and interest in working with adult students of various ages and abilities.

Health Insurance (sec. 4.6)
Employee working more than 30 hours per week on a regular basis over 12 months will receive one-party part-time health coverage ($248.84).

Holidays (Sec 4.4)
Holiday pay of four (4) hours for Christmas Day (Dec. 25), New Year's Day (Jan. 1), Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday, and Veteran's Day. 
*To be eligible, employee MUST work at least 12 hours during pay period in which holiday falls.
 
Bereavement Leave (sec 4.2)
