Class Summary

The Gwinnett County Department of Water Resources is a publicly-owned utility, committed to providing excellent water, waste water and storm water services at the best possible value to the citizens of Gwinnett County. The department is widely recognized for service excellence in the operation of 2 water production facilities, 3 water reclamation facilities and 226 pump stations. In addition, DWR maintains 3,667 miles of water lines, 2,654 miles of sewer lines and 1,325 miles of storm water pipe. The Department of Water Resources takes pride in stewardship of the environmental resources entrusted to us and pledge to be responsible as we manage water as a limited, but renewable, resource.

This is the first professional level in the GIS series. Incumbents are responsible for performing analytical duties in support of Geographical Information Systems. Incumbents troubleshoot user problems, create and change map and data layers and conduct routine needs analysis.
The Grade for this position is C411.

Essential Duties:

  • Provide complex technical support and troubleshoot problems for GIS/GPS users within DWR.
  • Collect GPS data for water, sewer, and storm water infrastructure throughout the County, QA/QC GPS data and perform data loads into the County GIS.  
  • Digitize new water, sewer and storm water infrastructure based off as-built drawings and the collected GPS points.
  • Use complex geoprocessing tools to analyze data and create custom maps to illustrate the results.   
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Experience with ESRI software (ArcGIS, ArcCatalog, ArcServer, etc.) preferably versions 9x or 10x. Experience in editing, maintaining, and troubleshooting GIS geodatabases. Experience in producing GIS presentation maps for management or the general public. Experience with GPS Mapping or Survey grade data collection equipment and software, preferably Trimble equipment with TerraSync and Pathfinder software. Experience with maintaining GIS utility assets, preferably water, sewer, and storm water.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in a closely related field;
  • One year of directly related GIS experience;
  • Valid Driver's License from state of residency;
  • Or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above
