Description

Highly skilled journeyman mechanic able to repair, rebuild and/or overhaul various types of gas, heavy duty diesel powered trucks, fire trucks, rescue trucks, and construction equipment. Duties include but are not limited to, vehicles and equipment that include computer controlled, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.  Performs engine, transmission, brake, electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic troubleshooting and computer diagnostics to determine malfunction and then proceeds to affect repairs before returning equipment back into service.  Repair and replacement of heavy duty truck tires and heavy equipment tires, performs annual inspections and services.  Makes necessary road calls as required.  Also performs repairs on small engines and lawn equipment.  Performs related duties on all types of equipment as required.

Typical Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent.  Specialized technical training in heavy truck and heavy equipment repair.  Considerable experience on the journeyman level as an automotive and heavy equipment mechanic with a minimum of 5 years' experience in fire vehicle or heavy equipment repair. Must have the ability to utilize specialized fleet maintenance on board computer diagnostic evaluation and troubleshooting equipment.  Ability to utilize personal computers with Windows for fleet software tracking.  ASE Heavy Truck Certification desired.  EVT Certification desired.  ASE Automotive Certification desired.  A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.  Must have a valid Florida Class A or B CDL driver's license, or obtain one within six months of hire.  Must be able to perform skilled manual labor duties.  Some experience in supervising other workers is preferred.  Welding knowledge required. MUST HAVE OWN HAND TOOLS. Labor intensive position with the ability to walk, stand, climb, bend, kneel, stoop, push, and pull.  Must be able to perform moderate moving up to 50 lbs. on a regular basis and occasionally perform heavy moving up to 80 lbs.  Specific abilities include hearing, talking, seeing.  Exposure to loud noises, fumes, gasses, odors, machinery hazards and adverse weather conditions.

Position is open until filled.

Employees are paid biweekly. The pay range consists of a minimum and maximum salary. Initial appointment is usually made at the minimum salary of the pay range, but a higher salary may be considered for an especially well qualified candidate or to meet unusual needs. Annual merit increases of up to 3% up to the maximum of the pay range are based on fully effective job performance, or above, and are not automatic. Eligible Fire department employees receive annual merit increases of up to 4%.

Group health insurance is paid for by the City; 100% for full time employees and 50% for eligible dependents.

Paid leave includes: Vacation – accrue ten (10) days annually; Sick Leave – accrue twelve (12) days annually; Holidays – twelve (12) days off; Personal Days – two personal days after six months of service.

Pension plan: General Employees' Retirement System participation is required for all eligible employees. Each employee contributes a tax deferred deduction of 7% of their salary to the plan and the City contributes a like amount. The defined benefit pension plan is based on the average of the last five base salary years times 2% times years of service. If an employee leaves the employ of the City prior to seven (7) year vesting or retirement, their contribution, with interest, is refundable.  Fire pension participants contribute 11.6% and are required to participate in the Pompano Beach Police & Firefighters' Retirement System.

Other benefits offered to City employees include: cost of living adjustments (when applicable), tuition reimbursement, tax deferred savings plan, credit union services, direct deposit, sick leave bank, sick leave to vacation conversion, and an employee assistance program.

Part time employees are not eligible for benefits and benefits may vary depending on bargaining units.
