TRIAL COURT DOCENT VOLUNTEER PROGRAM
 
We are looking for qualified candidates to host eighth through twelfth grade students and their teachers for Court Tour programs.
 
This recruitment is to establish a list which will be used as needs arise within the department. Please note, opportunities may not be immediately available at the time an application is submitted. If you wish to inquire on the status of your application, please contact HRStaffing@occourts.org.
 
Please note that your application will remain active for six months. After this time, a new application will be required.
 
Note: Volunteer assignments are unpaid.

Example of Duties

Volunteers assigned to this innovative and interactive program will help students learn about the court system.  Volunteers work in teams and devote three to four hours, one or two days per month, October through May.


EXAMPLE OF LEAD GUIDE DUTIES - Duties may include but are not limited to the following:

Coordinate with the school prior to the tour date, organize activities with the team of walk around docents and teachers, gather supplies and daily workload from Administrative staff, notify the Sheriffs with details of the tour and approximate number of students, review the daily workload for appropriate case eligibility, coordinate with courtroom staff to allow students to observe, set-up and clean up dark courtroom for mock trial, supervise students and ensure compliance with court policies. Good interpersonal or communication and phone skills are essential.


EXAMPLE OF ASSOCIATE GUIDE DUTIES - Duties may include but are not limited to the following:

Greeting students and coordinating with teachers, engage with visiting students using trivia and history provided, supervise students and ensure compliance with court policies, walk around with students to observe courtrooms, must be able to stay on schedule and problem-solve, participate in a scripted mock trial, assist with copy work, special projects, and making follow up phone calls as necessary. Good interpersonal or communication and phone skills are essential. 

Minimum Qualifications

EXPERIENCE
  • Court Employment within past 10 years; or
  • Court Volunteer within past 10 years; or
  • Teaching Experience;  or
  • Law Degree; or
  • College Degree in Political Science, Criminal Justice, Civics, Public Administration, or related field.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Ability to walk around the court house.
  • Must commit to a minimum of 3 to 4 hours in the mornings on 1 for 2 days per month for 8 months.
  • Submit a completed online application.

ABILITY TO
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with peers, supervisors, managers, and the public.
  • Use considerable discretion and interpersonal skills when dealing with diverse groups (peers, public, etc.) in a professional atmosphere.
  • Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Provide strong customer service.

I understand that State law requires that I must possess valid automobile/liability insurance and agree to have such coverage if I am involved in using my own vehicle for Court business. It is also my understanding that a criminal record check is conducted on all interns/externs, and the results of such check is used for the sole purpose of evaluating the suitability to access Court files, confidential information.
