Job Description

To perform a variety of semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance of street, water, sewer and storm drainage systems.
 

Essential Duties

Operates trucks of various sizes and weights in the loading, hauling and unloading of various equipment, materials, and supplies.
 
Operates a variety of contractor's equipment and trucks utilized in construction, maintenance and repair activities.
 
Operates small equipment and tools to maintain streets.
 
Prepares concrete for curbs and gutters.
 
Rakes asphalt.
 
Controls traffic at work sites by flagging to guide traffic through work areas, as required or assigned.
 
Adheres to assigned work schedule as outlined in the Department and City attendance policies and procedures; ensures all behaviors comply with the City's Personnel Rules and Regulations; possesses and maintains a valid driver's license and comply with City of Killeen driving policy.
 
Performs all On-Call assignments as outlined in the On-Call Schedule and Departmental policy.

Performs all other duties as assigned.

Required Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:  

  1. Graduation from high school or equivalent; and,
  2. Six (6) months of experience involving the use of light and medium equipment. 
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 
  1. Considerable knowledge of light-equipment operating principles;
  2. Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to light equipment operations;           
  3. Working knowledge of the methods, materials and tools used in street and utility maintenance work;
  4. Skill in operation of listed tools and equipment;
  5. Ability to understand and follow oral or written instructions.
  6. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  7. Ability to observe proper safety precautions.
  8. Ability to establish effective working relationships with other employees, supervisors and the public;   
  9. Ability to perform heavy manual tasks under varying weather conditions;
  10. Ability to drive and operate a variety of equipment under varying conditions.
  11. Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance. 

Supplemental Information

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS  

  1. Must have a valid Texas CDL Class A license with Tank Endorsement by date of hire, and comply with the City of Killeen driving policy.
  2. Must have or acquire within thirty (30) days from date of hire all National Institute Management Systems (NIMS) certifications as required by City and position. 
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
 
Motorized vehicles and equipment, including backhoe, payloader, skid steer, common hand and power tools, shovels and safety equipment.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions.  The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration.  The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.
 
The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
