Definition

This is a professional staff, part time, seasonal position with the City's Parks & Recreation Department. All applicants must be able to commit to 40 hours per week, Monday - Friday from May 29, 2018- August 3, 2018.
 

 

Examples of Work

Camp Counselors will spend the day with a group of 10-15 campers and will take campers from one activity to the next ensuring all campers have a safe, fun, enjoyable day. Counselors will teach and lead groups sports games, large and small group activities, and craft and science experiments.  They should be prepared and ready to facilitate each activity including: telling the children the directions or rules, splitting them into teams, and starting the activity. Camp counselors should work together to ensure campers are following the rules and successfully completing activities. If they are not need to referee or otherwise enforce rules during an activity- they should be actively engaged with campers. Camp Counselors will also be responsible for enforcing rules and discipline in a fair and equal way.

This person should be patient, fair, and energetic. Above all else, they must love working with children!

ADDITIONAL DUTIES:
• Ensure the safety, well-being and personal growth of campers
• Coordinate and facilitate a wide variety of activities for campers
• Explain activities to a group of 30 or more children
• Assist campers in completing activities, crafts, and experiments
• Be prepared with proper supplies for each activity
• Supervise and interact with children while maintaining a safe and fun environment
• Actively play with children throughout the course of each activity
• Enforce proper behavior and discipline campers when necessary
• Be a positive role model for campers and their family
• Lead children on planned field trips
• Clean the facility and play areas after each activity

Education, Experience, or Certification

• High school diploma required
• At least two years of college education desired
• At least 6 months of comparable experience required
• Efficient swimming skills are desired

The Department of Human Resources Organizational Development may consider an equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience.

Part-time, contingent, seasonal, and temporary workers do not receive benefits.
