Description

The City of Grand Junction Horticulture Maintenance Crew maintains hundreds of acres of landscapes throughout the City. A summer-time seasonal position with this crew will be exposed to the maintenance and installation techniques associated with thousands of annual and perennial flowers. Our crews manage every aspect in creating the beautiful landscapes experienced in the downtown shopping district, our local and regional parks, cemeteries and right of way landscapes. This job will be a great fit for individuals who love to be outside enjoying the landscapes that our beautiful city provides. Summer Season: April, May – August; potential for optional season extension. Hours vary including evenings, weekends and holidays.

Duties

  • Maintenance of flower and shrub beds; including but not limited to hand pulling and chemical control of weeds, fertilization, pruning and shaping of landscape plants, and pest control
  • Maintenance of Horticulture greenhouse
  • Perform a variety of duties associated with the care and maintenance of irrigation systems
  • Trash pick-up, sidewalk cleaning, and event staffing

Qualifications

Primary functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for bending, stooping, kneeling, standing or walking for prolonged periods of time; lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling and moving heavy furniture and equipment.

Candidates selected for the position must successfully complete a drug/background screening.

Parks & Recreation Benefits:  Seasonal employees are eligible for Golf and Aquatics benefits if they work an average of 10 hours per week. Each employee will need to purchase an annual access card for $35. Seasonal employees will be able to play golf rounds at Tiara Rado and Lincoln Park for a reduced green fee price of $9.00 (9 holes) or $14 (18 holes) and/or  receive an annual aquatics pass for the Lincoln Park-Moyer Pool and Orchard Mesa Pool. Immediate family members may also purchase an aquatics pass for $20 per immediate family member. 
TeleHealth: Is available for a low monthly premium of $7.95. TeleHealth combines 3 essential benefits into one package. Teledoc: Members can access a physician when they can't reach their primary care physician or when it's after their doctor's normal hours of operation. The doctor can diagnose and prescribe short-term medication. Health Advocate: a team of nurses supported by a team of medical directions and administrative experts, who assist individuals in getting the most value from their healthcare benefits. eDocAmerica: provides 24/7 access to web-based answers to medical questions from an expert team of board-certified physicians, psychologists, pharmacists, dentists, dietitians and fitness trainers.
Paid Time Off: Seasonal employees working more than 1040 hours in the previous season accrue eight (8) hours of PTO at the beginning of their second season and accrue eight (8) additional hours with each season worked, up to a maximum of 40 hours. Balances do not carry over from year to year and, if not used, will be paid to the employee at the end of the season.
457 Deferred Compensation Retirement Savings Account: Full-time seasonal employees who work over 1040 hours per year may be eligible to participate in this tax deferred retirement savings plan.
