Planning & Public Works – Maintenance & Operations Division

40 hours per week (no benefits), may include mandatory overtime

Position Summary

POSITION SUMMARY:
Duties/Skills
  • Provide manual labor for maintenance and landscaping projects
  • Maintain and safely operate small power tools and landscape equipment
  • Follow verbal and written instructions
  • Work well with the public and provide excellent customer service
  • Safely operate a motor vehicle
 Abilities / Work Environment
  • Ability to work a variety of shifts, including weekends and/or evenings
  • Ability to report to a variety of work locations depending on job sites
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical labor, including lifting up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to kneel, bend, climb, reach, crawl, work at heights, and walk on uneven terrain
  • Work is performed outside in all types of weather conditions
  • Work may be performed around various types of vegetation that emit dust, pollen, and scents/odors and house a variety of insect types
  • Work may be performed around fertilizers and landscaping chemicals

Qualifications

Applicant must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Be able to read and follow verbal and written instructions
  • Have a valid Washington State driver's license
  • Be able to operate small electric and gas powered tools and hand tools
  • Be able to work on steep, uneven terrain in all weather conditions
  • Be able to lift at least 50 pounds

DRIVING STANDARDS

The following driving standards represent the maximum allowable violations of driving laws and must not exceed six (6) total points in the last 36 months.

Violation Type = Points
  • Denial of issuance of driver's license = 8 points
  • Negligent homicide = 8 points
  • Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs = 8 points
  • Negligent Driving 1 (involving an accident) = 8 points
  • Negligent Driving 2 (involving an accident) = 4 points
  • Hit and run (attended) = 8 points
  • Hit and run (unattended) = 6 points
  • Driving while driver's license suspended = 4 points
  • Other moving violations involving an accident = 4 points
  • Other moving violations not involving an accident = 2 points
  • Reckless driving (involving an accident)  = 8 points
  • Reckless driving (not involving an accident) = 6 points
  • Speeding in excess of the posted limit:
    • 0 - 14 over = 2 points
    • 15 - 19 over = 3 points
    • 20 - 25 over = 4 points
    • over 26 = 5 points
* Note: Other driving offenses not listed here will be assessed points values on a case by case basis.

Sick Leave
Extra hires are eligible to receive sick leave in accordance with the WA State Minimum Wage Act.  Extra hires are not eligible for other County benefits.

Social Security
All Pierce County employees are covered by the federal Social Security and Medicare systems. The county and the employee pay an equal amount into the system.

Retirement and Deferred Compensation
