Position Summary

The award-winning Brooklyn Park Recreation and Parks Department is looking for highly motivated, team-oriented and enthusiastic individuals who have a desire to make difference in Brooklyn Park by aiding group swimming lessons to preschoolers. A Water Safety Aide is responsible for implementing group swimming lessons and will work under the general supervision of an aquatic supervisor.

A Water Safety Aide is a member of the Recreation and Parks staff team that works together to develop innovative service delivery methods and programs focused on quality partnerships, service to our community and achieving successful results.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintain a professional appearance
  • Maintain a safe environment for all participants
  • Maintain a positive attitude and help ensure a fun learning experience
  • Confidently demonstrate necessary skills during lessons
  • Learn participant names
  • Take initiative during group lessons (ex. sing songs, play games, provide limited supervision)
  • Help set up/put away equipment and maintain an organized pool environment
  • Know and enforce all established pool rules during and between lessons
  • Be familiar with and follow established emergency procedures
  • Arrive on time (15 minutes prior to start of lessons)
  • Attend all required training
  • Commit to the goals and philosophy of City of Brooklyn Park Aquatics program
  • Find substitutes as needed
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by Supervisor

Minimum and Desired Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  •  14 years of age
  • Current Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Aide certification, volunteer or teaching experience
  • Ability to work with supervisors and coworkers in a timely and professional manner
  • Ability to work under limited supervision
  • Ability to provide a level of customer service that meets/exceeds customer expectation and satisfaction
  • Ability to professionally exhibit cultural sensitivity, patience, and understanding in the course of work duties
  • Ability to relate to and work with individuals representing a variety of diverse backgrounds and cultures
Desired Qualifications
  •  16+ years of age or older
  • Current Red Cross Lifeguard certification with two (2)+ years experience
  • Working with youth in or out of the pool environment
  • Competitive swim experience
  • Completion of Red Cross Swimming Level 5 or higher
  • Previous exposure to City of Brooklyn Park Aquatics Program
  • Previous experience working with diverse populations
  • Fluency in a second language other than English
Equivalency
An equivalent combination of education and experience closely related to the duties of the position will be considered.

Additional Information

Department/Division: Recreation and Parks Department/Aquatics Division

Anticipated Work Schedule: This is a part-time, non-benefited position that will work less than 20 hours per week; work shifts will vary from weekday evening to daytime or weekends depending on time of year.

Anticipated Hiring Wage: Varies depending on experience and certifications
 

Regular, full-time City of Brooklyn Park employees (30 or more hours per week) are eligible for a benefits package including:
