Job Description...

Perform a full range of technical electrical work utilizing and training prisoner workers to maintain facility operations, safety, and security.  Provide for the operation, maintenance, repair, installation, and replacement of underground extensions, electrical distribution systems with voltage from 120/208, 480, 13.2K; both single and three phase, security and fire alarm and intrusion systems, exterior and interior lighting systems, all interior power systems, and utilization equipment for facilitiy.  Plan and order equipment and materials for all work completed on the above systems.  Responsible for the security and supervision of prisoners, tools, and equipment.  The duties of position occur within the secure perimeter of the correctional facility and is test designated.

Required Education and Experience

Education

Educational level typically acquired through completion of high school.


Experience

One year of electrical trade experience equivalent to an Electrician Licensed 9.

Additional Requirements and Information

Possession of a journeyman electrician's license.
 
Some positions may require possession of the Commercial Driver's License (CDL) issued by the Secretary of State as required by Public Act 346 of 1988 to operate a designated state vehicle.

     An applicant who has been convicted of a misdemeanor or felony shall not be eligible for employment until one year after satisfactory completion of any sentence imposed, including parole or probation.  However, an applicant with a conviction for a violation of the controlled substance act or criminal sexual conduct in any jurisdiction, including the military, will be ineligible for consideration for employment by the Department of Corrections.

Leave Time

Full time employees receive between 15 and 35 vacation leave days per year. Employees also receive 13 sick days per year, and employees receive 8 hours of leave to participate in certain school functions or community activities. Employees may also qualify for up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave for certain family or medical situations.

Deferred Compensation

Employees may invest income in a tax-deferred retirement investment program. The state offers two optional deferred compensation plans, the 457 and 401(k). Employees decide the amount you want deducted from your paycheck.


Retirement

Employees receive a minimum 4% state contribution toward their retirement fund. If an employee elects to contribute more, the state will match that percentage (up to 3%).
