Basic Function

Assists in the planning, promotion, development, implementation and supervision of various programs, activities, special events, leagues and tournaments.

Nature & Scope

This position may report to the Active Adult Supervisor, Aquatic Supervisor, Recreation Supervisor, Event Production Supervisor, Lake Parks/Campground Supervisor, or Athletics Manager, depending on the area of specialty. Specialty areas include fitness, athletics, aquatics, special events, adult activities, lake parks, and recreation programs.

 
1.            Assists in planning, organizing and supervising various recreational programs, activities, special events, leagues, tournaments, adult activities and projects associated with area of specialty, usually with a 6-12 month lead time prior to the event.
 
2.            Informs the community of recreational opportunities through advertising and promotions. Markets and promotes programs by preparing recreation publications, newsletters, and flyers for mailing and through other media.
 
3.            Coordinates with City departments, community organizations, volunteers and school districts regarding facility availability and scheduling.
 
4.            Maintains and recommends supply and equipment needs.
 
5.            Makes recommendations to Supervisor to hire part-time staff and contractors involved in programs and activities. Directs, trains, schedules and evaluates regular part-time, part-time, casual and temporary staff. Prepares time sheets for staff members.
 
6.            Meets with and assists staff with assigned responsibilities and expected results.
 
7.            Coordinates various programs with other City and department personnel to inform them of activity involvement and anticipated assistance (i.e. Parks Division, Building Maintenance, and Convention & Visitors Bureau).
 
8.            Provides quality customer service at all times. Greets public, answers telephone, provides information and registers participants.
 
9.            Provides various program and activity reports for supervisor. Makes recommendations for addition of new programs.
 
10.          Investigates and resolves citizen complaints concerning programs, events, classes, instructors, or the facility.
 
11.          Prepare daily financial reports and deposits as needed.
 
12.          Abide by City safety and health codes and ordinances.
 
13.          Drive City vehicles as needed.
 
14.          Performs other duties as assigned.
 
Day-to-day contacts include: peers, other City personnel, community residents, local agencies, volunteers and supervisors.
 
EQUIPMENT
 
Computers used for registrations, flyer and form production, memos, letters, etc. City vehicles may be used to transport program materials, people and for various errands. May operate cash register, various pool equipment, weight equipment, kitchen appliances, and scoreboards. May use cleaning equipment such as brooms, mops, and brushes and cleaning supplies. 

Required Skills

Requires a Bachelor's degree in recreation/leisure studies or area of specialty or the equivalent combination of education and/or experience. Must pass a credit and criminal background check and have a valid Texas Class C driver's license with an acceptable driving record as defined by City policy. CPR and First Aid certification required within first 6 months of hire or promotion. Knowledge of adult programs, various sports and leisure activities. Ability work day, evening, weekend hours depending on programs. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Skill in dealing effectively and efficiently with the public. Physical ability to perform assigned tasks. Recreation Coordinator over the Active Adult programs required to attend SCS (Senior Citizen Services) food handlers training within the first 3 months of hire or at the earliest available opportunity thereafter. Must obtain a Class "B" CDL license with passenger endorsement within the first 6 months of hire or promotion and take Defensive Driving classes as scheduled.

Regular full-time employees are assigned to work at least 40 hours per week, and are eligible for the City's benefit package, subject to the conditions and limitations of each program.
