Position Summary

Operates an 8 to 35 passenger bus in a manner that provides safe, courteous, reliable and efficient passenger transportation, information and assistance to various destinations within the district.

Essential Functions/Major Responsibilities

a) Completes vehicle pre-trip and post-trip inspections utilizing methods designated by federal and state Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations and guidelines. Prepares vehicle inspection reports and advises the Transit Supervisor of any immediate repairs or irregularities needing attention (after hours contact the on-call Supervisor for immediate needs).

b) Operates an 8 to 35 passenger bus on various routes and schedules providing service to persons with disabilities, the elderly and the general public.

c) Assists passengers, as needed, with boarding or disembarking buses including assistance with luggage, shopping bags, packages, shopping carts, baby strollers, walkers and other miscellaneous articles; secure articles as needed.

d) Utilizes bus lift to board passengers with a variety of wheeled mobility devices; properly secure passengers and wheeled mobility devices.

e) Promotes good passenger relations by providing positive treatment of passengers; greet passengers in a tactful and courteous manner; assists with seating, questions, directions and other service related matters; assures passenger comfort, safety and security.

f) Collects fares and sells coupon books; issues receipts for coupon books when requested; responsible for monies collected.

g) Completes, prepares and submits required paperwork accurately, including but not limited to time sheets, trip, incident, accident, referral, and vehicle inspection reports.

h) Fuels vehicles and performs light mechanical adjustments as needed.

i) Operates two way radio/phone for professional routine communications with dispatcher and other transit vehicles; monitors mobile communications; reports unusual conditions such as, but not limited to, incidents, vehicle collisions, road conditions, passenger safety and security, traffic or equipment problems; use of cell/camera phone.

j) Utilizes universal precautions when handling potentially infectious materials to prevent disease transmission.

k) Remains calm and focused following an incident involving a passenger and/or vehicle.

l) Responsible for passenger and vehicle safety and security following an incident.

m) Maintains courteous and professional conduct with co-workers at all times; project a positive public image.

n) Responsible for the interior and exterior cleanliness of vehicles including outdoor work in inclement weather.

o) Cares for and turns in lost and found articles.

p) Trains new hires in policy, procedures and transit skills and in learning the various routes and scheduled Dial-A-Ride services.

q) Performs other related duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/LICENSES/CERTIFICATES REQUIRED:

High school diploma or equivalent. Must possess a valid Oregon commercial driver license with a passenger endorsement and have a current DOT medical examiner's certificate.

• Drive under all conditions of weather, roadways, and traffic while successfully dealing with passengers' route and schedule requirements.

• Resolve customer complaints courteously and tactfully and maintain a courteous, professional approach when dealing with the public.

• Maintain punctual and regular attendance to provide dependable service to the public; complete work in a timely and accurate manner.

• Demonstrate sensitivity to passengers' needs and limitations.

• Tactfully maintain order, safety and security among passengers.

• Read and interpret maps.

• Remain flexible in handling changes.

• Communicate effectively orally and in writing in a professional manner.

• Maintain accurate records and reports.

• Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.

• Relate effectively with people of varied age, physical condition, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds, using tact, diplomacy and courtesy.

• Be certified to drive all the various buses.

• Use appropriate practices and procedures when securing various types of wheeled mobility devices.

• Assure the proper and safe seating and securement of the very young, including infants.

• Multitask during normal and emergency operations.

• Undergo hands on fire extinguisher training and bus evacuation procedure training.

Job Conditions and Physical Demands

JOB CONDITIONS:

• This is a safety sensitive position and requires pre-employment and random drug testing mandated by the Federal Transit Administration.

• Varied shifts; must be willing to work early morning and late evening shifts, weekdays and weekends. Must report to work at the scheduled time and location and seldom be absent from work. Must be dependable in completing work in a timely, accurate and thorough manner and be conscientious about assignments.

• Duties are performed in an outdoor environment. Work is typically in a sitting position while driving a vehicle. . Subject to adverse weather and traffic conditions; exhaust fumes, diesel and gasoline fuel, equipment noises. Also subject to exposure and close contact with verbally and/or physically abusive individuals.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Essential job functions require the ability to:

• Meet CDL standards.

• Speak clearly to provide information.

• Sit in a transit vehicle for extended periods without a break and to work an 8 to 10 hour shift.

• Use arms, wrists and hands to turn steering wheel of transit vehicle.

• Use legs to apply pressure for braking of transit vehicle.

• Adjust transit vehicle seats and mirrors to gain necessary line of vision to maneuver vehicle safely.

• Maneuver approximately 600 pounds (passenger in a wheeled mobility device).

• Maintain full and complete use of all limbs to operate vehicle controls.

• Climb, stand, walk, bend, stoop, crouch and kneel to inspect vehicle or assist passengers.

• Push, pull or maneuver carts, strollers, wheeled mobility devices.

• Lift approximately 50 pounds or more.

Physical capability to handle high mobility demands and complex personal interactions.

a) Physical Ability: Tasks involve the ability to exert very moderate physical effort in light work, typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate to heavy weight (20-75 pounds).
