Purpose of Position:

What does the job do?
This position works at a highway Port of Entry and inspects Commercial Motor Vehicles, Drivers and Cargo for safety.

How does the job get done?
This position will select vehicles and/or drivers for inspection.  They will inspect vehicle equipment or drivers documents for safety.  This position will place vehicle of driver out of service when required.

Who is this job done for?
Motorists and commercial vehicles traveling New Mexico roads.

The Ideal Candidate:
Has experience with safety related work. 
Has worked as auto mechanic on commercial vehicles or heavy equipment. 
Has experience inspecting commercial and/or motor vehicles to ensure compliance with New Mexico and Federal highway rules, regulations, procedures, and laws.   

Interviews are anticipated to be conducted within two weeks of closing date.

This position is a Pay Band 55.

MTD Transportation Inspector

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma and one (1) year general work experience.

Employment Requirements:
Must possess and maintain Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) certification in North American Standard Level I; Hazardous Material/ Transportation of Dangerous Goods; Cargo Tank; and Other Bulk Packaging inspections. If the candidate does not possess this certification at the time of hire, successfully completing the CVSA certification at the time(s) offered by the Department of Public Safety, and successful completion of the exam(s) within two attempts, as set forth in policy. Must possess and maintain a valid new Mexico Driver's License. Must have no felony convictions. Employment is subject to a pre-employment background check and is conditional pending results.  Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment.


Statutory Requirements
Must successfully complete North American Standards certification to include Commercial Motor Vehicle Parts and Systems training and obtain Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) Level 1 inspector certification within one (1) year of hire.  Must also be able to successfully complete and maintain Hazardous Materials (non-bulk), Bulk Packaging (cargo tanks) and Motor Coach CVSA inspector certifications.    May be required to obtain and maintain CVSA Level 6 Radiological inspector certification, depending on the assigned Port of Entry.

Working Conditions:
Work is performed in an office and field setting with significant sitting, dragging, bending, kneeling, standing, walking, crawling and driving and with exposure to stressful situations, noise and uncooperative subjects. Performs duties in all types of inclement weather conditions. Lifting up to 50 lbs.
