Description

Are you interested in providing services to the citizens of St. Louis County? In this position you will be providing a valued service, by assuring public health and safety by limiting public exposure to the mosquito population. This job classification is also responsible for assisting in the disease-carrying pest control program by disbursing a chemical treatments, setting traps at breeding and complaint sites, and answering inquires.

The starting salary is $12.22. There are seven (7) open positions. If additional positions become vacant during the course of the season, qualified applicants will be interviewed to fill additional vacancies.

This is an on-call position working 40 hours a week, weather permitting, which could work year round, but heaviest utilization will be from April through October. (qualified applicants interviewed and hired as needed throughout the season)

This is predominately an outdoor, field position requiring some stamina and physical ability. Vector Control Assistants are part of a team whose mission is to protect the public health by conducting mosquito surveillance and applying chemical treatment for larval and adult mosquitoes. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach is utilized to minimize adult mosquito populations; targeted treatment is based on field surveillance.

Examples of Duties

Inspect County easements and creeks for rodent and mosquito activity, determine trap locations, set bait, apply pesticide mixture and collect mosquito specimens.

Answer inquiries from the public and relay information to the County Vector Control Specialist who maintains written record of complaints.

Perform janitorial and clerical duties by sweeping and picking up work areas, filing, completing necessary forms and updating maps.

Perform other duties as required or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Preferred coursework in biology, natural science or any equivalent combination of training and experience.

Special Requirements:
Possession of a valid driver's license. Also, sufficient physical strength to perform field work is required.

EQUIPMENT USED: (Illustrative examples)
Truck, sprayers, dippers, sample cups, gloves, boots, flashlight, protective clothing, map books, miscellaneous tools, microscope, computer, telephone.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Driving, walking, standing for long periods, proper application of pesticides, exposure to biting insects, stoop, bend,; walking for long periods in rough terrain and working around standing water; exposure to hot and humid weather conditions. Balance, bend/twist at waist, climb or work on ladders and stairs; kneel, lift, push/pull, reach above shoulders, squat, stand/walk for long periods; work out of doors in extreme temperatures. Ability to lift and carry 25 lbs.

There is no medical or dental benefits provided for this position.

Prorated (10 days) PTO the first year (paid time off) based upon seniority, prorated paid holidays, credit union and 457 Deferred Compensation Plan.

SELECTION AND APPOINTMENT: A selection committee will evaluate the qualifications of each applicant which will include recency and appropriateness of the applicant's education and experience, results of employment references investigated and any other appropriate information available.

The selection committee will admit to the interview only those persons who possess the most job related qualifications and may establish admittance criteria beyond the minimum qualifications stated above. The interview will comprise 100% of the applicant's earned grade.

A candidate must earn a qualifying grade of 70 or more on the interview to be eligible for appointment.

The five top ranking candidates, based on the final grade, will be certified to the Director of the Department who will make the final decision.

All applicants conditionally offered a permanent part-time, full-time; term or on-call position will be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Screening will be performed by a reputable clinical laboratory. The cost of screening will be borne by the County.
