Primary Objective

Under guidance of Park Operations Supervisor or Head Lifeguard, controls and maintains Park District swimming areas to prevent accidents, assists swimmers and keeps area and facilities clean while creating a favorable image of Three Rivers Park District.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Maintains a constant vigil for drowning and/or injured swimmers and assists swimmers when necessary

Inspects beach area daily for hazards or unsafe conditions and maintains safety equipment in proper working order

Maintains crowd control in swimming areas

Weekly reviews rescue and water safety skills

Maintains daily swimming records and reports

Keeps swimming area and facilities clean including picking up and general policing of beach, and rest room cleaning

Performs other related duties as apparent or assigned

Qualifications

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
 
Education and Experience
Minimum 16 years of age upon appointment, 18 preferred. Must hold current Red Cross Lifeguard Training or equivalent certification upon appointment through termination of employment.

Certifications
Hold current CPR/AED certification upon appointment through termination of employment, specifically: Red Cross for the Professional Rescuer, Red Cross for Lifeguards, or American Heart Association Basic Life Support.
 
Language Skills
Ability to read and understand operating, safety and procedure manuals, written instructions and product labeling, and complete various written reports.

Communication Skills
Ability to communicate with park guests, supervisors, and co-workers in a positive, friendly manner both orally and in written form.  Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with the general public and Park District personnel.

Mathematical Skills
Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's.
 
Reasoning Ability
Ability to apply emergency situational thinking and responses by applying a more complex learned response to the particular situation.  Ability to apply common sense thinking to resolve simple individual tasks and easy routine procedural problems by applying simple learned responses.

Other Skills and Abilities
Ability to work under minimum supervision. Ability to communicate with people in normal and stress situations.
 
Physical Requirements
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is regularly required to stand, ski, walk, stoop, kneel, or crouch.  The employee must be able to climb ladders.  The employee must be able to perform the arduous physical tasks that may be required of the position, such as is necessary for water rescue.  Applicants must be free of any physical condition that would adversely affect the performance of the duties of a primary responder. The employee must be able to lift and/or move incapacitated persons, with assistance from others, at weights up to 250 pounds.
 
Work Environment
The employee works mostly outdoors and in all weather conditions including rain, snow, extreme cold, high wind chill factors, heat, wind, and sun, and darkness of night.   The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Selection Procedure

A fully completed Three Rivers Park District Online Application must be received by Human Resources by the closing date and time listed on the job posting. Any materials received after the closing date and time will not be considered.

Applications will be evaluated on the basis of relevant experience and training. A top group of applicants will be invited to participate in further job screening.

Final appointment is contingent upon the applicant passing a background investigation including a criminal history search. Costs of the background will be paid for by Three Rivers Park District.

Part-time Non-benefited and seasonal staff receive all legally mandated benefits such as worker’s compensation insurance and Social Security, but are ineligible for all other benefit programs.

Payroll Banking and Direct Deposit
Payroll banking via direct deposit is available to employees. In addition membership in the City/County Credit Union is also available. Enrollment information will be available at your orientation.

Complimentary Passes
A Recreation Activity Pass is available to provide employee access to some Park District recreational facilities for which a user fee is charged.
