Description

The City of Grand Junction offers full-time and part-time spring/summer seasonal positions.  Duties, work schedule, hours and length of season depend on area of assignment. Areas of assignment could include Forestry, Suplizio Field/Stocker Stadium, Parks Operations, and/or Weed Abatement. Under general supervision, performs a variety of duties and responsibilities, forestry operations, landscaping, mowing, sports field maintenance, horticulture, weed abatement, irrigation or weed cutting. 

Duties

Perform a variety of duties in the care and maintenance of Riverfront Trails, Urban Trails, Weed Abatement Operations on City properties and within City right-of-ways, apply herbicides, fungicides, and pesticides safely and accurately; maintain records of chemicals used; operate a variety of equipment including grounds keeping equipment, mowers, trimmers, chain saws, tractors, power and hand tools, and other specialized maintenance and vegetation control equipment; respond to requests and inquiries from customers and the general public; maintain records related to area of assignment; clean and maintain assigned areas; pick up and discard trash; maintain parking lots, walkways and other facilities; perform work in emergency situations during or after regular work hours as required; utilize proper safety precautions related to all work performed; assist in maintenance projects outside of regularly assigned area depending on work needs. Hours may vary including evenings, weekends and holidays.

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent with the desire to work in and experience of the above stated divisions. Possession of or ability to obtain, a valid Colorado driver's license, (CDL desired for Forestry Positions).

Knowledge of: Operations, services and activities of assigned Division; policy and procedures, methods, standards, techniques, materials, equipment and tools used in the area of assignment. 

Ability to: perform semi-skilled maintenance, construction and repair work; use and operate vehicular and stationary mechanical equipment, power tools; perform heavy manual labor in unfavorable weather conditions, work irregular hours / schedules; understand and follow oral and written instruction; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Physical Conditions: Primary functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for bending, stooping, kneeling, standing or walking for prolonged periods of time; lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling and moving heavy items and equipment.

Parks & Recreation Benefits:  Seasonal employees are eligible for Golf and Aquatics benefits if they work an average of 10 hours per week. Each employee will need to purchase an annual access card for $35. Seasonal employees will be able to play golf rounds at Tiara Rado and Lincoln Park for a reduced green fee price of $9.00 (9 holes) or $14 (18 holes) and/or  receive an annual aquatics pass for the Lincoln Park-Moyer Pool and Orchard Mesa Pool. Immediate family members may also purchase an aquatics pass for $20 per immediate family member.

Paid Time Off: Seasonal employees working more than 1040 hours in the previous season accrue eight (8) hours of PTO at the beginning of their second season and accrue eight (8) additional hours with each season worked, up to a maximum of 40 hours. Balances do not carry over from year to year and, if not used, will be paid to the employee at the end of the season.
457 Deferred Compensation Retirement Savings Account: Full-time seasonal employees who work over 1040 hours per year may be eligible to participate in this tax deferred retirement savings plan.
