Description

The City of Norfolk's Department of General Services, Facilities Maintenance division is seeking a Maintenance Mechanic II who will perform maintenance on city buildings and grounds, including interior building maintenance and preventative maintenance of equipment. Work will also involve fence repair and installation, repair, installation and removal of park benches, hardware and fixtures.  Tasks also include providing support for special events and exhibits.
 
 

Essential Functions

Department Hiring Salary Range: $31,804 - $34,985


Essential functions include but are not limited to:

  • Constructs, installs, maintains, inspects, repairs/replaces various types of permanent and temporary fencing at parks, building grounds and other locations.
  • Constructs, maintains, inspects, repairs and installs various interior building components and systems including but not limited to walls, doors, windows, floors, ceilings, stairs, cabinets and countertops.
  • Constructs, maintains, inspects, repairs and installs various exterior building components and systems including but not limited to roofs, windows, doors, siding, decks, handrails, balusters, entrance ramps and steps.
  • Provides support for special events by maintaining, delivering to site, setting up and removing bleachers and barricades.
  • Provides support for special events by installing and removing temporary fencing at designated locations.
  • Maintains, inspects, repairs and installs various locksets, cylinders, deadbolts, cam locks, file cabinet locks, pad locks and other door, window and equipment locking systems and associated hardware.
  • Repairs, installs and removes modular furniture system components, file cabinets, partitions and other office case goods and appointments.  Moves from building to building.
  • Repairs and replaces concrete sidewalks, steps, curbs and slabs.
  • Fabricates, maintains, inspects, repairs and installs various types of interior and exterior signage.
  • Inspects, maintains and repairs beach accessways.
  • Obtains estimates for material, parts, hardware or service to repair buildings, fences, equipment, etc.
  • Updates work orders in computer based management system.
  • Schedules, coordinates and oversees work while serving as liaison between building managers and contractors.
The preferred applicant will have the ability to:
  • Drive and operate a forklift, dump truck, tractor, stake body truck as well as other vehicles and equipment.
  • Safely use and maintain the serviceable condition of various hand and power tools employed in building maintenance.
  • Work in a team environment and follow written and verbal instructions and assist other trades when necessary.
  • Stand/walk for extended periods of time, lift from ground to above shoulder, climb, bend, stoop, sit, push, and pull.
  • Perform tasks requiring manual dexterity.

Education/Experience

Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational and technical processes. Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency.

Two years' experience as maintenance mechanic.

Preferred applicant will:
  • Have experience with a computer based preventative maintenance/digital management system.
  • Have ability to read work orders, safety data sheets, and instructional manuals.
  • Perform general math calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  • Write general correspondence and fill out work orders and other items.
  • Have ability to exercise professional judgment in selecting proper choices of action within limits set by standard practices and procedures.
  • Have ability to work well with others both inside and outside the organization as well as vendors and suppliers.

Additional Information & Requirements

Valid Driver's License.  A DMV transcript is required (obtained within the previous 30 days), at time of interview.
