Job Description

Purpose of Position:
The purpose of the position is to provide planning and execution of treatment programs and supervision of clients on probation and parole.

REFERRED APPLICANTS WILL BE NOTIFIED VIA EMAIL OF THE PROCESS TO SCHEDULE SCREENING AND SPECIFIC VACANCIES AVAILABLE.

Pre-Employment Screenings are held every Tuesday and Wednesday and you must attend both days.  You must arrive no later than 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday.  Please arrive a few minutes before to allow for sign-in.  If you arrive after screening begins, you will have to call back and reschedule. 
 
The screening process is as follows:
  • On Tuesday morning you will fill out a "pre-agility" packet to include a release for a NCIC background check to be completed, a fingerprint registration form and any other releases/forms needed by the Academy.
  • Once the needed paperwork has been completed, you will need to pass an agility test which will include Push-Ups, Sit-Ups, and a Beep Test.
    • Requirements can be found at www.cd.nm.gov under the "Recruitment and Employment" tab.
  • Once the physical agility portion is successfully completed, a psychological evaluation will be administered and you will be given a polygraph examination.
  • Once all of the above has been successfully completed, you will be scheduled by appointment for a psychological interview on either Wednesday or Thursday, depending on availability. You will be notified of your scheduled interview (date and time) before you leave on Tuesday. 
  • Upon successful completion of the screening process, applicant will be scheduled for a job interview with Probation/Parole staff.
  • Applicant will be required to pass a medical screen and a urinalysis drug test.
  • A reference background will be completed on applicants who successfully complete the screening and interview process.

Classification Description

Probation Parole Officer I

Minimum Qualifications

Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in sociology, psychology, criminal justice, and/or business administration or closely related field. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling two (2) years may substitute for the required education.

Employment Requirements:
This position is designated as safety sensitive. Employment is subject to pre-employment and random testing, in accordance with all terms and conditions of federal and state law, rules and regulations in relation to alcohol and/or drug testing. Successful completion of a series of Defensive Tactics and Restraint Courses to include exposure to Mace/OC Spray within one (1) year from date of hire as a condition of continued employment. Successful completion of First Aid and CPR Courses within the one (1) year of date from hire as a condition of continued employment is required. Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License. May be required to carry a firearm, work odd hours and visit offenders' home. Employment is subject to a pre-employment background investigation and is conditional pending results. Employment is conditional pending results of pre-employment drug test.

Statutory Requirements:  
Assignment as a Probation Parole Officer in Juvenile Justice Division must be in accordance to 32A-2-2 NMSA Annotated 1978, Juvenile Probation and Parole Services.  Assignment as a Probation Parole Officer at NMCD must adhere to the following:

  • At the time of their appointment, be citizens of the United States.
  • At the time of their appointment, have reached the age of majority.
  • Be of good moral character and not have been convicted of a felony or any crime of moral turpitude in the courts of this or any other state or in the federal courts.
  • Subject to a drug test as a condition of employment and on-going random drug testing as a condition of assignment to a safety sensitive position.
  • Successful completion of the New Mexico Department Of Corrections Basic Probation and Parole Officers Certification Training within twelve months of hire and annual re-certification. 
  • Maintenance of skills in self-defense, handcuffing, baton, and chemical agents and annual re-certification.

Working Conditions:
Work is performed in an office and field setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and telephone usage and includes daily contact with adult offenders and/or inmates.
 

Conditions of Employment:

  • Incumbents must be willing to be frequently on-call 24 hours a day.  Work is in an office setting, client's home and institutions.

  • Incumbents must be willing to work with offenders that have high-risk behaviors, needing intervention and/or services.
  • Incumbents must be willing to work with potential risk from offenders who are possible under the influence of drugs or alcohol, or otherwise distressed.

Default FLSA Status:
Non-Exempt. FLSA status may be determined to be different at the agency level based on the agency's utilization of the position.

Bargaining Unit:
This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement and all terms/conditions of that agreement apply and must be adhered to.
