Job Description

Why does the job exist?
Performs flight safety assessments of space vehicles and launch platforms; monitors commercial space launches and re-entries and operation of launch and reentry sites. Coordinates Spaceport space activities with the Office of Commercial Space Transportation of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA/ASD and with the US Army White Sands Missile Range (WSMR). Complies with International Trading in Arms Regulations (ITAR).

How does it get done?
The job is done by planning, coordinating and conducting mission readiness reviews prior to launches. The incumbent participates in environmental and operational tests associated with aircraft, aerospace systems, and related equipment. Will analyze project requests, proposals, and engineering data to determine feasibility of Spaceport America's ability to support.  Will evaluate product data and design from inspections and reports for conformance to engineering principles, customer requirements, and quality standards. Develops technical reports, handbooks, and user guides for use by engineering staff, management, or customers. Reviews performance reports and documentation from customers and field engineers, and inspects malfunctioning or damaged products to determine problem.

Who are the customers?
This position works with the Aerospace Operations team and interfaces directly with the aerospace companies performing operations at Spaceport America. The job also interfaces with key external stakeholders including White Sands Missile Range (WSMR) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

  • Safety and risk analysis
  • Making and interpreting maps in aerial/satellite imagery

This position is a Pay Band 90

Due to the available budget allocated for this position, the hiring rate will not exceed $38.29 per hour.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Aerospace or Aeronautical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, systems engineering, or physical science (with an emphasis on applied analysis) and five(5) years of experience in space launch operations planning and execution systems, applying aeronautical and engineering principles to launch operations analysis, performing statistics-based risk assessments, analyzing space vehicle trajectories, working with guidance, navigation and control systems, developing and interpreting maps. US Citizenship is required.

Employment Requirements:
Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License.

Working Conditions:
This position combines work in an office setting with highly physical work outside during rocket launches. Must be able to lift 25 lbs. Must have the ability to drive a state vehicle over rough terrain. Requires extensive personal computer skills and telephone usage. This position is sometimes required to work overtime and flexible schedules.
