Job Description

Purpose of Position:
Why does the job exist?

This position will be responsible for researching and cataloging museum objects and artifacts, conducting exhibition research and curation, and responding to public and professional inquiries regarding the museum's collection. Incumbent will also work closely with museum leadership staff to plan/develop state of the art exhibitions in alignment with the museum's mission; produce written and other published materials that are related to the museum's collection/exhibitions; and coordinate multi disciplinary teams to ensure the exhibit development and production projects are finished within budget and in a timely manner.    

How does it get done?
This position will plan, develop, and see through to completion new exhibitions, related publications and programs, and collections in area of specialization; develop exhibition and related programming collaborations with cultural institutions regionally, nationally, and globally; develop annual grant proposals for conservation, exhibitions, public and educational programs and related projects and provide assistance in fundraising efforts for museum projects; coordinate with El Palacio, Museum of New Mexico Press, or other publishers for the timely production of exhibition and collection catalogs approved by the Director and Exhibition Team process of the NMHM; coordinate with the conservation, graphic designers, photographers, preparators, collectors, authors, etc., within and outside the museum to promote the exhibit; train museum guides and volunteers in conjunction with Education staff to lead public tours through exhibitions and collections to educate the public about the importance of museum holdings.
 
Who are the customers?
This position will serve the general public, museum and Palace of the Governors visitors.
 
The Ideal Candidate:
The Ideal candidate has the following: (1) MA or PhD degree in History, Art History or Museum Studies (concentration in Spanish Colonial or Mexican Period of the Southwest, (2) Fluency in Spanish, (3) Exhibitions and publications on Spanish Colonial, Mexican and Southwest themes, (4) Direct experience in collaborating with arts and cultural organizations domestically and internationally. (5) Direct experience in working with lenders, donors, and supporters in exhibition development.

Interviews are anticipated to be conducted within twp weeks of closing date.

 
This position is a Pay Band 70.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Museum Studies, Museology, Art, Art History, Art Administration, Anthropology, American Studies, Archaeology, Curatorial Studies, History, Humanities, Interdisciplinary Studies, Liberal Arts, Public History, or Paleontology and four (4) years experience in exhibit development, collections management, curation, creative writing, conducting research in specialty area of a museum, and working with historical concepts. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling eight (8) years may substitute for the required education and experience.

Employment Requirements:
Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification within six (6) months of date of hire as a condition of continued employment.

Working Conditions:

Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending and reaching may be required. Must be able to lift 25 lbs.
