The City of San Bernardino is seeking a self starter able to work in a fast-paced environment responding to emergency and non emergency calls for service.

The ideal candidate will be detail oriented and customer service focused.  Experience in computer-assisted dispatching and telephone complaint processing is preferred.

Position requires working four (4) ten (10) hour shifts per week including nights, weekends and holidays. May be required to work extended hours.

Minimum Qualifications

Education, Training and Experience:
A typical way of obtaining the knowledge, skills and abilities outlined above is graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent; and at least one year of customer service experience working with the public in person, by telephone or in radio communications. Experience in computer-assisted dispatching and telephone complaint processing is preferred.

Typing speed of 30 words per minute is required.

Police Dispatcher I may be considered for advancement to Police Dispatcher II after demonstrating proficiency to perform the full range of duties of the latter class as described in established performance criteria. Typically, a Police Dispatcher I is expected to be capable of meeting the proficiency criteria within a 12-month period, depending on an individual's prior experience and progression in performing the full range of Police Dispatcher II duties.

Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements:
Successful completion of P.O.S.T. Public Safety Dispatcher course is required within 12 months of date of employment. Peace Officers currently employed at the San Bernardino Police Department who have satisfactorily completed a one-year probation may submit a copy of the P.O.S.T. Basic Certificate in lieu of completing the P.O.S.T. Public Safety Dispatcher Course.

Retirement for Current Members - For employees hired after 1/1/2013 who are current members of California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS) or a reciprocal agency as of 12/31/12 and have not been separated from service from such agency for six months or more, the retirement benefit shall be 2% @ 55; highest single year of compensation.

Retirement for New Members - For employees hired 1/1/2013 or later and who are not a member of the California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS) or a reciprocal agency as of 12/31/12, or those who have been separated from a public agency which contracts with CalPERS or a reciprocal agency for six months or more, the retirement benefit shall be 2% @ 62; 3 year final compensation. New members will be obligated to pay 50% of the “normal cost” of their retirement benefits as required by State law.
