Job Description

Purpose of Position:
Why does the job exist?

This position serves as special collections librarian for the Fray Angelico Chavez History Library within the New Mexico History Museum. The position will be responsible for the cataloging of the library's acquisitions in all formats to make them accessible to patrons. This position will also develop/maintain the library's Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC) databases and will direct volunteers in the technical area.

How does it get done?
This position will receive new materials, prepare/research appropriate information for Machine Readable Catalog (MARC) record, direct volunteers, make cataloging revisions as indicated on revised cataloging records. The position will also add original materials in the Online Computer Library Center (OCLC), create library profiles according to the library's internal needs and vendor's requirements, upload tapes of records into WorldCat and Horizon/SALSA databases, perform entrance interviews and provide intellectual assistance to patrons.

The Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate has experience with and in the following:

  • Special collection libraries and archives
  • Preparing and researching appropriate information for Machine Readable Catalog (MARC)
  • Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC)
  • Effective library and information services in a specialized collections environment
  • WorldCat and Horizon/Salsa databases

Interviews are anticipated to be conducted within two weeks of closing date.

This position is a Pay Band 70.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's Degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association (or recognized by the appropriate body of another country) with two (2) years experience in performing and providing advanced library technical operations, effective library and information services, plus cataloging experience and managerial experience. 

Employment Requirements:
Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License.  Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification.

Working Conditions:
Library environment which generates a certain amount of dust. The majority of work Is performed at a computer monitor. Lifting 20 lbs., moving of boxes, shelving, climbing stairs. Occasional evening and/or weekend work. Occasional travel.
