Description

Technical work involving horticultural services for the City. Work is performed under supervision of the Ground Maintenance Supervisor. Participates in operating the City Nursery, i.e.; propagating, seeding, cultivating, planting/transplanting, fertilizing, pruning and spraying. Assists in the supervision of crews involved in horticultural services. Keeps time and material records and makes reports. Inspects the development of vegetation on public property. Performs related work as required.

Typical Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent. Experience in ornamental horticulture. Experience in performing the above referenced tasks. BMP-Best Management Practices certification required.  FNGLA-Florida Nursery Landscape Growers Association Certification or other horticultural certification or degree highly desired. Must possess a valid Florida Class "B" CDL at the time of application. A comparable amount of training and/or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications. Knowledge of the principles and techniques of seeds, propagating, cultivating, planting, transplanting, fertilizing, pruning and spraying. Knowledge of trees, shrubs, plants and flowers native to or capable of growing in the area. Knowledge of current materials, supplies and equipment for horticulture. Knowledge of landscape pests and diseases and the ability to identify and diagnose nutrient deficiencies in landscape. Ability to operate heavy machinery and light equipment. Ability to read landscape plans, procure landscape materials, and layout plants and trees according to plan specifications. Knowledge of proper planting techniques, tree bracing, tree trimming, and root pruning. Ability to supervise employees. Ability to plan activities and to maintain detailed records. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Must be able to work efficiently without close supervision. Labor intensive position with the ability to move up to 50 lbs. on a regular basis and occasionally move up to 100 lbs. Must be able to work outside in all weather conditions. Some standing, walking, moving, climbing, carrying, bending, kneeling, crawling, reaching, and handling, pushing, and pulling.

Official title: Nursery Technician.  

Employees are paid biweekly. The pay range consists of a minimum and maximum salary. Initial appointment is usually made at the minimum salary of the pay range, but a higher salary may be considered for an especially well qualified candidate or to meet unusual needs. Annual merit increases of up to 3% up to the maximum of the pay range are based on fully effective job performance, or above, and are not automatic. Eligible Fire department employees receive annual merit increases of up to 4%.

Group health insurance is paid for by the City; 100% for full time employees and 50% for eligible dependents.

Paid leave includes: Vacation – accrue ten (10) days annually; Sick Leave – accrue twelve (12) days annually; Holidays – twelve (12) days off; Personal Days – two personal days after six months of service.

Pension plan: General Employees' Retirement System participation is required for all eligible employees. Each employee contributes a tax deferred deduction of 7% of their salary to the plan and the City contributes a like amount. The defined benefit pension plan is based on the average of the last five base salary years times 2% times years of service. If an employee leaves the employ of the City prior to seven (7) year vesting or retirement, their contribution, with interest, is refundable.  Fire pension participants contribute 11.6% and are required to participate in the Pompano Beach Police & Firefighters' Retirement System.

Other benefits offered to City employees include: cost of living adjustments (when applicable), tuition reimbursement, tax deferred savings plan, credit union services, direct deposit, sick leave bank, sick leave to vacation conversion, and an employee assistance program.

Part time employees are not eligible for benefits and benefits may vary depending on bargaining units.
