Definition

The Camp Nurse provides for the medical needs of participants who are registered in the Inclusion program. Our goal is to provide a safe, enjoyable experience for people of all abilities under the guidelines of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). 
 
Camp Schedule: varies from 6/25/18 through 8/31/18. Finalized work schedules will be determined in early June.
 
Required Training: Training will be required and held on select dates in May and June. More information will be available upon selection.
 
Salary:  $15.52-$20.36 depending on qualifications.

Functions

  • Provides direct medical care to students such as administering oral medications, care of students with diabetes, seizure disorders, asthma, ADD, autism, anaphylaxis, and/or allergies.
  • Provides routine and emergent (first aid) health care services for campers.
  • Tracks and maintains student health data as needed.
  • Distributes emergency care plans to camp staff, training them regarding the health concerns and staff actions listed on the individualized plans.
  • Maintains health supplies for the camp, and notifies Inclusion supervisor when supplies are low and need to be filled.
  • Maintains camper health files, medication logs, and daily logs.  Sends notification (by "health pass" or by phone) to parents when campers experience a health issue or injury while at camp.
  • Follows universal precautions and infection control procedures at all times.  Instruct others as necessary to minimize the risk of transmitting contagious or infectious diseases.
  • Other related duties as needed to ensure the efficient operations of the camp health services.
  • Maintain records, notes and doctor's orders on participant(s).
  • Communicate and work well with all program participants, other staff and any individuals contacted in the course of work.
  • Respond to public inquiries regarding program guidelines.
  • Assist with administrative functions such as adapting program planning to meet assigned participant's medical needs, making weekly/monthly reports on strategies used and the participant's progress, making accident/discipline reports regarding assigned participant (and communicating these reports to the site leader), providing site leader/parent conferences regarding assigned participant and other reporting/documentation required for assigned participant.
  • Assist in developing positive public relations.
  • Attend staff meetings and required trainings.
  • Assist in providing a safe program and environment for participants and staff. Make any necessary actions for assigned participant's needs in emergency situations and report to appropriate staff.
  • Understand and implement City of Vancouver Parks and Recreation Department operating principles, policies and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current R.N. license in good standing for the state of Washington.
  • Successful experiences working as an R.N., preferably with children, in an educational or camp setting, or other service agency for school age children.
  • First-Aid/CPR/AED certification required.
  • Be familiar with and understand characteristics of various disabling conditions and medical needs. Examples include: autism, Asperger Syndrome, ADHD, ADD, bi-polar, Tourette syndrome, PTSD, SBD, SDBD, etc.
  • Must be 21 years or older.
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 25lbs. and walk 2 miles.
Required Licenses and/or Certifications
  • Current CPR/First Aid card required by the day of scheduled work assignment; training is provided.
  • Bloodborne pathogen training is required within 10 days or by first day
  • Additional training/certification as required by department or position.
  • Knowledge of American Sign Language is a plus.
Abilities
  • Observe health and well-being of participant(s) assigned.
  • Implement medical protocol for assigned participant(s).
  • Maintain records, notes and doctor's orders on participant(s).
  • Administer prescription and over- the-counter drugs when necessary.
  • Communicate with parents and staff regarding illness/injury/medical needs of participants.
  • Be a medical resource that would bridge the gap between basic medical knowledge and emergencies.
  • Maintain a clean, comfortable and well-supplied health care area.
  • Maintain medications in locked cabinet/lock box.
  • Establish and maintain effective work relationships with the public, program participants, other city employees and other individuals contacted within the course of work.
  • Monitor and interact with a large, diverse group of participants.
  • Be aware of and respond to each participant's physical and emotional needs.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to listen and carry-out instructions both written and verbal.
  • Comply with policies and procedures of Parks and Recreation programs/area of assignment.
  • Work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends.
