Job Description

This position operates a refuse collection truck to collect and transport residential refuse and functions as a relief driver as needed.

Essential Job Functions

  • Loads refuse, trash, and brush into a refuse collection truck; drives sanitation truck as needed
  • Rakes trash and brush into piles and loads into packer
  • Cleans sanitation truck after completing daily route
  • Performs routine maintenance on sanitation truck
  • Operates packing mechanism
  • Completes reports of daily activities
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years
  • Possession of or ability to obtain within six months of hire a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL-B) issued by the State of Oklahoma

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Sanitation Crewleader assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES: Guidelines include traffic laws, employee safety guidelines, residential refuse collection guidelines, and department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY: The work consists of related duties in the operation of a refuse collection truck. Heavy traffic, vehicle malfunctions, and inclement weather contribute to the complexity of the work.

SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to operate a refuse truck in the collection and transfer of residential refuse. Successful performance results in the provision of effective sanitation services to residents of Broken Arrow.

PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with city personnel and the general public.

PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to provide services.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, bending, crouching, or walking. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and distinguishes between shades of color.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed outdoors. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, irritating chemicals, and cold or inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.

* The wellness discount is applied to medical premiums of employees who complete a three-step process during the annual Health Fair: a Health Risk assessment, a Health Screening, and attendance at a Results Meeting.

2. The City pays the entire premium for a term life insurance policy which provides a benefit of 1x annual salary. A long-term disability benefit is also provided by the City at no cost to the employee.

3. One week of vacation is available after six months of employment. Thereafter, vacation is accrued monthly according to years of service. The annual accrual schedule is as follows:

4. Twelve paid holidays each year.

5. Eight hours of sick leave accrue per month. Each employee may accrue to a maximum of 1,040 hours (130 working days).

6. The City offers through the Oklahoma Municipal Retirement Fund a defined contribution plan. Retirement benefits are earned through employer and voluntary employee contributions, plan forfeitures and investment return. Presently, the City contribution rate is 10%. Employees become 20% vested after three years and vesting increases 20% for each additional year of service until 100% vesting is achieved at seven years.

Participants may invest contributions in any of the investment options. The employee may have a voluntary payroll deduction ranging from 2% to 10% of gross pay.

7. Through the ICMA Retirement Corporation employees may defer from federal and state income taxes up to $18,000 to supplement retirement benefits. The employee may choose between a variety of mutual funds and fixed interest investment options.

8. The City offers a flexible benefit plan program, which reduces the tax liability on health insurance premiums, vision materials expenses, childcare expenses and unreimbursed medical expenses.

9. The Employee Assistance Plan is designed to assist employees and their family members with emotional health and well being.

10. There are a variety of other benefit programs an employee may participate in on a payroll deduction basis. These currently include credit union and pre-paid legal services.
