As Washington State's IT service provider, NSD delivers reliable, cost-effective, & innovative networking solutions to state agencies, municipalities, and authorized consumers. NSD securely interconnects state agencies by maintaining 135+ routing tables & 130+ Virtual Domains (VDOMs) while maintaining 4000+ routes enabling 800+ sites to communicate & share information with each other; we are the state's Wide Area Network (WAN) provider & Internet Service Provider (ISP) leveraging carrier-class architecture.
 
NSD is WaTech's leader in innovative research, development, design, and strategic integration of carrier-class network infrastructure + service provider architecture + advanced technology; directly supporting 50k+ state users, state agency intercommunication, 45k+ telephony customers, data center colocation, and Enterprise resources across multiple data centers.
 
What would you be doing in this role? 
This position serves as the highest technical expert in network design & technology integration at an Enterprise & Service Provider level. This position is not a Network Operations (NetOps) position; this position engineers and develops solutions, strategy, and technical designs that NetOps implements.
 
Develop, validate, & present high-level strategy, low-level (detailed) designs, & actionable implementation plans used to integrate new technology to existing infrastructure and architecture; liaise with state agencies, vendors, & external service providers as appropriate.
 
Serve as a technical Subject Matter Expert (SME) for customer engagements, consultations, & internal projects concerning data center switching, WAN interconnectivity, network segmentation, core routing, & cloud networking.
 
As the Network Engineering Lead, the incumbent is expected to perform quality assurance & quality control of Network Engineering processes, deliverables, & services; for clarification, this is not a Supervisory position.
 
This position will customize network-engineering processes, practices, and deliverables to meet the ever-changing demand of delivering networking solutions to the State of Washington. Therefore, motivated and true technologists should immediately apply; do not pass up this opportunity.

Here's What We Are Looking For:
1. Seven (7+) years engineering, administering, managing, & designing network solutions, leveraging Cisco architecture for medium to large networks (WANs & MANs).
 
2. Bachelor of Science degree in Network Engineering, Information Systems, Computer Science, Information Technology, or an equivalent technical discipline from an accredited college or university. Note: Additional years of experience may substitute for the Bachelor's degree on a year-by-year basis.
 
3. Superior communication (written & verbal) customer service experience in developing, formatting, tailoring, and presenting network strategy, business cases, and design proposals to Executive Leadership, Service Owners, & technical Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) for Q&A and consideration. 

An ideal candidate will have these desired (not required) qualifications:
1. Desired Master of Science degree or higher in Network Engineering, Information Systems, Computer Science, Information Technology, or an equivalent technical discipline from an accredited college or university.
 
2. Desired IT certifications include, but not limited to (validation required):
• Cisco Certified Design Associate (CCDA)
• Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA)
• Cisco Certified Network Associate Service Provider (CCNA SP)
• Cisco Certified Network Associate Data Center (CCNA DC)
• Certified Fiber Optic Technician (CFOT)
 
3. Desired operational experience in designing, administering, configuring, &/or  troubleshooting the following:
• Virtual Routing & Forwarding (VRF) – multiple routing table environment
• Network Device Scripting (Cisco Configurations using NXOS, IOS, and IOS-XR)
• Border Gateway Protocol (eBGP and iBGP)
• Data Center Fabric Switching Technology (Cisco's FabricPath preferred)
• Data Center Interconnect (DCI) Technology (Cisco's OTV preferred)
• Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS)
• Fortinet Virtual Domains (VDOMs)
 
4. Desired experience with the following Network Management and Monitoring tools:
• Orion SolarWinds
• Net Flow Tools
• Cisco Prime (formerly called Cisco Works)
• Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Visio, SharePoint) 
 
5. Desired experience in working with new or unfamiliar technologies; independently using documentation, online resources, and other available sources of education to advance & integrate technology.

Insurance Benefits

Retirement and Deferred Compensation
 
State Employees are members of the Washington Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS).  New employees have the option of two employer contributed retirement programs.  For additional information, check out the Department of Retirement Systems' web site.
 
Employees also have the ability to participate in the Deferred Compensation Program (DCP).  This is a supplemental retirement savings program (similar to an IRA) that allows you control over the amount of pre-tax salary dollars you defer as well as the flexibility to choose between multiple investment options.
 
Vacation (Annual Leave)
 
You begin accruing vacation starting your first month of employment. Since we value your loyalty, the amount of vacation you can accrue increases the longer you work with us. Washington State supports members of the armed forces with 21 days paid military leave per year. Vacation accrues for full-time employees per WAC 357-31-165.
