General Information

Work Schedule:  June through August
Weekly Hours:  Up to 40 - Operation Hours 7:00am to 6:15pm / Monday - Friday
Work Assignment:  Varies – May include mornings, days and evenings.

Locations: GT Bray and John Marble

 
Plans and executes leisure activities such as sports, arts, crafts, drama and special events.  May supervise or instruct a group of children planning activities and administer discipline as appropriate.  Responsible for the safety and well-being of children, ages 5 and up, in a structured seasonal day camp program.  Maintains participant safety, administers first aid and completes incident reports.  Work is performed with some independence and reviewed for results obtained.  Incumbents in this position are required to work flexible hours.
 
NOTE:  DEPENDING ON QUALIFICATIONS (DOQ), POSITION LEVEL AND PAY RATE WILL BE BASED UPON EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATIONS AND/OR LICENSES.

Note: OPS stands for Other Personal Services. This is a temporary position and not eligible for health or retirement benefits, is not a regular position.

Minimum Qualifications

Camp Counselor Training and Experience:
 
Completion of 11th grade and at least 17 years of age at the time of Summer Camp start date.  Current CPR and First Aid certifications desired (training provided).
 
Senior Camp Counselor Training and Experience:
 
High School Diploma or GED and at least 18 years of age at the time of Summer Camp start date.  Current CPR and First Aid certifications required before beginning assignment (training provided).  Six months prior experience working with youth in a child care or camp setting is required.
 
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills
 
 

  • Knowledge of a variety of recreation activities suitable for children, youth and clientele having special needs.
  • Knowledge of facilities and equipment needed in a comprehensive recreation program.
  • Knowledge of rules and regulations governing the play of a variety of recreation games.
  • Knowledge of hazards and safety precautions necessary for protection of the public and employees in recreation activities.
  • Ability to work flexible hours.
  • Ability to effectively supervise children.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, orally and in writing.
  • Ability to understand and carry out instructions, orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to deal with the public firmly, courteously and tactfully, even under stressful conditions.
  • Ability to maintain concise, accurate records.
  • Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations.
  • Skill in leading, instructing and supervising recreational activities and programs.
