Definition

This is a mid-level, laborer and helper, full time position in the City's Public Works Department. An individual in this position is responsible for performing maintenance to the City's streets and drainage systems.

Examples of Work

• Repair concrete pavement; patch potholes; lay asphalt; repair wheel chair ramps; flag traffic; set up work zones; saw cutting; mud jacking; building and repairing inlet tops and aprons; set forms; and repair curbs;

• Set pipe, spread stabilized sand; clean debris in pipes to complete drainage duties; clean out inlets and lakes; de-clog gutters; and haul loads;

• Operate, clean and maintain heavy equipment such as a street sweeper, mud jacking machine, dump truck, bull dozer, backhoe and front end loader; and light equipment such as a jack hammer, chain saw and crack sealing machine;

• Sweep streets and intersections and perform mosquito control functions;

• Coordinate and supervise community service crews;

• Assist with traffic signal repairs, pavement markings, sign repair and installations;

• Assist Police and Fire during emergency situations; sand bridges and streets when necessary; assist in natural disaster recovery; set up barricades during floods; and cut and remove fallen trees from the roadways;

• Assist other departments by mowing and trimming grassy areas and trees; moving office equipment and furniture; and setting up special events;

• Perform other related duties as assigned;

• Subject to 24 hour recall.

Education, Experience, or Certification

High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) Certificate, one year of relevant professional experience, two years of relevant experience in heavy equipment operation and a valid Class B Commercial driver's license are required.

The Department of Human Resources & Organizational Development may consider any equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience.
