The City of Norfolk's Fire-Rescue department is seeking experienced Firefighters across the various levels (Firefighter EMT – Advanced, Firefighter – EMT Intermediate and Firefighter EMT – Paramedic).

Essential Functions

The salary ranges for each Firefighter level are as follows:
 
Firefighter EMT – Advanced $42,450 – $62,830 Annually
Firefighter EMT – Intermediate $43,500 – 64,384 Annually
Firefighter EMT – Paramedic $49,354 - $73,049 Annually

Essential functions for each level include, but are not limited to the following:

Firefighter EMT – Advanced
Responds to fire, medical, hazardous material, and technical rescue emergencies and other hazardous conditions and takes appropriate actions to control the emergency and care for the sick and injured. Performs associated duties including training, pre-incident planning, fire safety inspection, public education, and equipment and facility maintenance. Operates emergency vehicles, systems, and portable equipment. Typically assigned to Operations but may be assigned to Administration, Fire Marshal's Office or Training as needed.

Firefighter – EMT – Intermediate
Responds to fire, medical, hazardous material, and technical rescue emergencies and other hazardous conditions, and takes appropriate actions to control the emergency and care for the sick and injured. Serves as attendant-in-charge (AIC) of an ambulance and coordinates the delivery of patient care. Performs associated duties including training, pre-incident planning, fire safety inspection, public education, and equipment and facility maintenance. Operates emergency vehicles, systems, and portable equipment. Typically assigned to Operations but may be assigned to Administration, Fire Prevention, and Life Safety or Training as needed.

Firefighter EMT – Paramedic
Responds to fire, medical, hazardous material, and technical rescue emergencies and other hazardous conditions and takes appropriate actions to control the emergency and care for the sick and injured. Performs associated duties including training, pre-incident planning, fire safety inspection, public education, and equipment and facility maintenance. Operates emergency vehicles, systems, and portable equipment. Typically assigned to Operations but may be assigned to Administration, Fire Marshal's Office or Training as needed.

Education/Experience

Firefighter EMT – Advanced
High school diploma or GED equivalent required.  Degrees in Fire Science, Emergency Medical  Services, or other related fields (i.e. emergency management and business administration) are preferred.

Completion of the Tidewater Regional Fire Academy (or other training program approved by the Fire Chief) and the Firefighter Recruit probationary period with Norfolk Fire-Rescue or experience as a Firefighter EMT-A in a combination fire/EMS department.

Valid Driver's License; current Virginia Department of Fire Programs Certifications in Firefighter II, National Incident Management System (NIMS) Incident Command System (ICS) 100, 200, 700 & 800.  Hazmat Awareness and Operations, Emergency Vehicle Operations and/or other "Firefighter Professional Qualifications" as required by the Virginia Administrative Code; current Virginia Department of Health certification as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)-Advanced; American Heart Association certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support for Health Care Providers. Successful completion of medical physical examinations and maintenance of health that establish medical fitness for duty as determined by the City of Norfolk physician.

Firefighter EMT – Intermediate
High school diploma or GED equivalent required.  Degrees in Fire Science, Emergency Medical Services, or other related fields (i.e. emergency management; business administration; human resources; etc.) are preferred.

Completion of the Tidewater Regional Fire Academy (or other training program approved by the Fire Chief), and the Firefighter Recruit probationary period with Norfolk Fire-Rescue or two (2) years experience as a Firefighter EMT-I in a combination fire and EMS department.

Valid Driver's License; current Virginia Department of Fire Programs Certifications in Firefighter II, National Incident Management System (NIMS) Incident Command System (ICS) 100, 200, 700 & 800, Hazmat Material Awareness and Operations certification, and Emergency Vehicle Operations certification; current Virginia Department of Health certification as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)-Intermediate or higher and current sanctioning to practice as an EMT-Intermediate by the City of Norfolk Medical Director; current American Heart Association certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support for Health Care Providers (CPR); and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification; and current Pediatric Education for Prehospital Professionals (PEPP) certification.

(Note:  Individuals hired by Norfolk Fire-Rescue into this job description (300615) as a Firefighter EMT-I, will be granted a grace period of up to six (6) months to obtain sanctioning to practice at the intermediate level by the City of Norfolk Medical Director).

Firefighter EMT – Paramedic
High school diploma or GED equivalent required.  Degrees in Fire Science, Emergency Medical Services, or other related fields (i.e. emergency management; business administration; human resources; etc.) are preferred.

Completion of the Tidewater Regional Fire Academy (or other training program approved by the Fire Chief) and the Firefighter Recruit probationary period with Norfolk Fire-Rescue, or two (2) years experience as a Firefighter EMT-P in a combination fire and EMS department.
