General Description

The City of Green Bay Parks, Recreation, & Forestry Department is accepting applications for a Special Populations Coordinator in the Playground program.  The Special Populations Coordinator is responsible for instructing and providing a specific recreation program adaptive to the needs and challenges of children with special needs, assisting the supervisor with planning and organizing the program, and providing a safe and comfortable environment for the participants.  Hours are Monday-Thursday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m., and Friday, 8-10 a.m. and 11 a.m.-5 p.m.  The pay range is $11.22 to $12.30 per hour.

Examples of Duties

  • Design and direct a comprehensive recreation program which includes low-organized games, special events, arts and crafts, individual tournament and swimming that are conducive and adaptable to children of special needs.
  • Attend and contribute at all staff meetings as scheduled.
  • Advertise and promote activities and events through bulletin boards, posters, and word of mouth.
  • Provide proper first aid for minor accidents.
  • Maintain a positive public image and foster a positive attitude when dealing with the public.
  • Responsible for safety and supervision of participants.
  • Report to work at assigned park at designated time.
  • Responsible for and maintain City equipment and property.
  • Check for hazardous situations and take necessary action to prevent accidents.
  • Keep park shelter area clean and dispose of debris in proper container.
  • Become familiar with and constantly enforce policies and procedures of the department.
  • Participation in all activities is required.  Check lesson plan and activity schedule on a daily basis.
  • Complete all required paperwork, i.e.: attendance forms, lesson plans, financial reports.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications Required

  • Be in uniform:
    • Playground shirt while on duty.
    • Shorts or pants - must be appropriate for active wear and in good public taste.
    • Athletic shoes with closed toe, closed heel required.  No sandals.
  • Report damages and dangerous situations immediately to supervisors and Park Shop.
  • Read Employee Manual.
  • Advertise and participate in all City-wide events:  Talent Show, Kiddie Parade & Karnival, Games Day, Track & Novelty Day, Wildlife Sanctuary Day, and Kids Day.
  • Integrate and diversify programs so they attract children of all ages, backgrounds, and to accommodate all physical and mental challenges.
  • Be aware of all special needs, restrictions and limitations of each individual prior to participation.
  • Set up a park store with candy, pop, healthy snacks, to sell to the children.  The profits are retained by the park and are used to purchase special treats and awards for activities.  You must retain all receipts and maintain up-to-date financial records.
  • Be able to work beyond scheduled hours and perform tasks on own time.
  • Follow all procedures of bloodborne pathogens (use of rubber gloves, mask, etc., if necessary).  Follow all documentation procedures.
  • Handle concerns in a proper and timely fashion.
  • Responsible for inventory.
  • Open and secure facility daily.
  • Proper documentation of emergencies and concerns.
  • Responsible for weekly special event of different themes, including decoration, events and related activities, refreshments, and creativity.
  • Assist participants in proper skill development and techniques in sports, games, and motor skill development.
  • Responsible for field trips, including selection of sites, arranging visit with organization, signing up children to go, making arrangements to get children there, supervising children at site, and making sure all children are picked up.
  • At times, Coordinator will be asked to visit and critique activities on playgrounds.
  • Will be responsible for keeping kids together throughout the day, including eating lunch.
  • This program requires children to be pre-registered and the children are required to remain with group until they are picked up by an appropriately designated individual.
  • Maintain discipline treating all participants fairly and equitably.  If problem is beyond your control, call supervisor or police on park radio.  Work cooperatively with police.  You are responsible for filing completed Problem Patron form with supervisor.
  • Commit to working the entire ten-week program.
  • Cooperate with coworkers.
  • Remain on playground during scheduled hours.
  • Submit end of the season written evaluation.
  • Must have completed two semesters of post high school education at an accredited technical college or university.
  • Experience in recreation programming preferred.
  • Ability to work and cooperate with others.
  • Experience, interest, and desire to work with special populations.
  • Abundance of patience.
  • Appreciation of needs and challenges encountered by children of special needs.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Physical Requirements:

  • Duties characterized as medium work, which is lifting 50 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 20 pounds.
  • Be able to drive for less than one hour at a time and stand, walk, and sit for 4-5 hours at a time.
  • Be able to repetitively grasp, manipulate, push, and pull.
  • Be able to occasionally bend, twist, squat, climb, and swim.
  • Be able to frequently reach, talk, hear, and see.
  • Be able to be exposed to heat, sun, cold, and/or rain 50% of the time.
