Description/Duties & Responsibilities

Under supervision of the Recreation Coordinator, this position supports participants with special needs so they are able to participate in City classes, camps, and programs offered. This position works with different staff at a variety of sites in a team environment. This position may work up to 40 hours per week during the summer months (June – August).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES

• Facilitate a positive recreation experience and promote socialization among individuals with disabilities, other participants, and program staff.

• Participate fully in all activities along with participant with special needs including, but not limited to, swimming, pool activities, active games and sports.

• Assist in the preparation of materials needed by the inclusion participants.

• Make adaptations to activities and crafts in order to ensure the participant's successful participation.

• Monitor and maintain the safety of all participants.

• Attend off-site field trips with participant if this is an approved camp/class activity.

• Monitor behavior of inclusion participants and provide appropriate guidance.

• Enforce rules in a clear and positive manner.

• Inform Inclusion Coordinator of concerns or issues.

• Communicate with parents and staff regarding the needs of the participant.

• Maintain a variety of records, files, and information in a confidential manner.

• Implement the Accommodation Plan and make daily written observations as required.

• Demonstrate good observation and communication skills; exercise good judgment.

• Assist staff in preparing and planning activities if appropriate.

• Act as a role model for youth.

• Attend meetings and training sessions.

• Other duties as assigned.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Understanding that all individuals deserve to be respected and treated with dignity in the least restrictive environment.

• Knowledge of individuals as whole people with physical, affective, cognitive, and social needs.

• Knowledge about a variety of disabilities and the needs of those populations.

• Ability to demonstrate understanding, patience, and receptive attitude toward individuals of varied age, special needs, and disabilities.

• Ability to demonstrate initiative and interest in learning.

Required for all Positions:

• Evidence of negative TB test taken within the last two (2) years.

• Possession of, or ability to obtain by June 7, 2018, Adult and Pediatric CPR/AED/First Aid. A Red Cross CPR/AED/FA course will be offered Tuesday, June 5 from 12:00 – 4:00 pm. Staff may elect to participate in this training at a cost of $28 for the certification.

• Ability to transfer, position, or lift participants with assistance up to a minimum of 40 lbs.

Availability:

• From 7:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. Shifts may vary depending on needs of program and may require split shifts.

Education and Experience

• High school diploma; some college preferred specific to a recreation, education or child care.

• Minimum of two (2) years experience working with children and individuals with various disabilities/special needs.

Staff Training: If selected for employment, a mandatory training is scheduled for June 4th-7th, 2018 from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Part-time, temporary, and seasonal (PTS) workers are at-will. Generally PTS employees are limited to no more than 1,000 hours.

In addition, PTS employees may be required to participate in the DMV Employer Pull-Notice Program. This program authorizes the City to receive a driver record report upon enrollment and during employment.
