Job Summary

NATURE OF WORK

Under general supervision, performs work of moderate difficulty in the painting on exteriors and interiors of buildings, structures, signs and equipment; this position has department specific responsibility.

Example of Work

(Illustrative Only) Prepares surfaces to be painted by use of power cleaning equipment, chemicals, scrapers, wire brushes, sandpaper, and sanding machines; patches plaster and sheetrock by using fillers, tape, spackling compound, and patching plaster; removes fixtures such as pictures, doorknobs, lamps, and electric switch covers prior to painting; applies paints, stains, sealers, varnishes, fillers, and other coating materials to interior and exterior of buildings, structures, signs, and equipment; mixes and prepares paints, lacquers, varnishes, shellacs and other preservatives; selects, blends and matches colors in proper proportions; assembles, operates various types of painting equipment, including striping machines, spray guns, pressure washer, grinder, high reach power and other equipment, erects various types of scaffolding, staging, ladders, and planks to reach surfaces of work areas; cleans and maintains brushes and other painting equipment; identifies, handles, and disposes of paints, stains, preparatory and undercoating materials, and other hazardous materials; monitors building and facilities for the purpose of evaluating conditions, identifying necessary repairs and recommending preventative maintenance; removes graffiti for the purpose of minimizing vandalism and maintaining attractive facilities; supervises working inmates assigned to painting detail; prepares costs and material estimates, work orders, and other job relating documentation; requests equipment and supplies; schedules projects; conducts inventory on materials, tools, and equipment for accountability; maintains regular and reliable attendance; performs other duties as assigned.

Experience and Education

High School Diploma or GED equivalent; two (2) years experience in painting exteriors and interiors of buildings, structures, signs and equipment; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: May require successfully completion of a background check, polygraph examination, and drug test prior to appointment; must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
 
This position is advertised from the minimum to the mid-point hourly rate. Salary will be determined based on education and experience at the time of offer.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of: Yuma County Policies and Procedures; Sheriff's Office policies and procedures; various methods of preparing surfaces; methods, techniques, materials, tools, and equipment used in painting; properties of various types of paint, and the application for mixing and blending paints; safety practices and procedures; required detention and security training; arithmetic and measurements.
 
Skills in: The preparation and application of paints, stains, and surface preparation materials to a wide variety of surfaces; handling and disposal of hazardous materials; supervision; planning and managing projects; preparing and maintaining accurate records; using computers.

Ability to: Operate and care for a variety of hand and power tools necessary to perform painting work; perform manual labor for extended period of time as required by work assignments; estimate labor and/or material costs by performing arithmetic functions; organize work load, set priorities, and meet critical deadlines; supervise working inmates effectively; follow written and verbal instructions; communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationship with supervisors, employees, other agencies, and the public.

WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS
(Illustrative Only) Work in performed inside and outside facilities; work in confined spaces; exposure to dust, pollen, noise, temperature extremes, and hazardous material; lift, carry, push, and/or pull objects weighing up to 60 pounds; climb, crawl, bend, reach, kneel, and stoop to reach paint areas; remain in a standing position for extended period of time; body flexibility and balance, to include climbing and working on ladders, scaffolding and/or power lifts up to 20 feet; visual and muscular dexterity to operate: equipment, hand tools, computer, telephone, and two-way radio; operate a motor vehicle and travel to/from various locations.

Southwest Service Administrator (SSA) Mexico PPO Health Plan: SSA is available to employees who are enrolled in YCEBT Medical PPO Plan. The SSA Plan pays 100% of hospital, medical, laboratory and prescription drug benefits, to a maximum of $3,500 per person per calendar year ($7,000 for two or more family members).
