Job Description

Responsible for planning, evaluating, designing and administering traffic and transportation engineering studies and projects.

Essential Functions

  • Conducts evaluations and prepare engineering studies for traffic related safety concerns such as intersection sight triangles, speed studies, intersection control studies, warrants analysis, school zone reviews, etc.  Correspond with citizens about concerns and/or complaints.
  • Reviews and approves traffic control plans associated with City or development projects.
  • Evaluates and reviews traffic impact analyses for proposed developments and coordinates with Planning and Development Services regarding comments and recommendations.
  • Works with the Traffic Operations staff to evaluate traffic signals, signs and striping installations for construction and maintenance activities.
  • Administers federal, state and locally-funded capital improvement projects for roadway, intersections and traffic signal system improvements, from design through construction. 
  • Helps prepare annual budgets for the Traffic Division and pursues federal and state funding opportunities for traffic/transportation improvement projects.
  • Assists with the evaluation, and planning the City's transportation system.  Helps determine causes of traffic congestion and recommend solutions. Help develop and implement Intelligent Transportation System throughout the City.
  • Provides administrative support for traffic related items presented at the Traffic Safety Commission, Planning and Zoning Commissions, City Council meetings and other public meetings.
  • Maintains regular and punctual attendance
Additional Duties:
  • Attends public meetings outside of normal work hours as required
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Texas.
  • Minimum of five (5) years directly related experience.
OR
  • Any combination of related education, experience, certifications and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of traffic/transportation engineering.
  • Knowledge of the terminology, methods, practices, and techniques used in traffic/transportation engineering.
  • Skilled in the use of personal computers and applicable software.        
  • Ability to apply principles and practices of traffic/transportation engineering in assigned projects.
  • Ability to develop, review and modify traffic/transportation engineering plans, designs, and specifications
  • Ability to operate office equipment including computers and supporting word processing and spreadsheet applications.
  • Ability to operate specialized computer programs or systems utilized in traffic engineering design including CAD, synchro, and TransCAD.

Conditions of Employment

  • Must have a valid Class "C" Driver's License and valid state required minimum automobile liability insurance prior to employment (must obtain Texas Class "C" driver's license and state required minimum automobile liability insurance within 30 days of hire per state law)
  • Must pass a drug test, driver's license check, criminal history background check, and social security number verification check
  • Must be registered as a Professional Engineer in the State of Texas or have the ability to obtain a registration within 6 months of employment
  • Must be able to work outside of regular business hours as required
Preferences:
