Alameda is an island city of 78,000 located next to the city of Oakland and offers a full-service municipal recreation program. Neighborhood recreation programs are offered at ten locations throughout the city. The Small Fry/Tiny Tot Program is conducted at six recreation centers throughout the city.  Alameda's Aquatic Program, conducted at Emma Hood and Encinal Swim Centers, is open to children and adults. Alameda's Summer Day Camps are open to children who have completed Kindergarten through 5th Grades and are located at Hidden Cove (Robert Crown Memorial State Beach Park in Alameda) and Trails End and Trailblazers (Redwood Regional Park in Oakland).

We hire for open positions year-round, but in general, hiring for Summer positions is highest in February/March.  Hiring for School Year positions is highest in June/July.  Dynamic, ethical, and enthusiastic individuals who share our values are encouraged to apply!

Below are some of the standards expected of Recreation and Park Department Staff: 
BEHAVIOR: Staff are expected to always be respectful of others and maintain a friendly, courteous and professional attitude.
APPEARANCE: Depending on the assignment, staff must wear either professional business attire or a Department uniform that includes a staff shirt and name badge. Uniforms are provided. Staff must maintain facilities and help keep them neat and clean.
WORK QUALITY: Staff are expected to perform quality work and to plan effectively and efficiently.
FLEXIBILITY: Staff work hours vary due to Department needs (nights, weekends and holidays). Staff may be asked to perform work assignments outside their area of original employment.
 

Examples of Duties

Below is a general description of the part-time job opportunities available at Alameda Recreation and Parks. For a more detailed description of each position, click here.

AQUATICS LIFEGUARD ($11.08 - $14.84), AQUATIC INSTRUCTOR ($11.63 - $15.58), AQUATIC SPECIALIST ($14.13 - $19.89)
Aquatics Staff help with all aspects of running ARPD's swim programs and swim centers. During spring, lessons and Adult Lap Swim will be offered on Saturdays only at Encinal Swim Center. During the summer months, swim lessons are taught at Emma Hood on Monday through Thursday. At Encinal, swim lessons are taught Monday through Thursday. Lessons are also offered on Saturdays at Encinal. Public swim hours are offered Monday through Friday at Emma Hood and only Fridays and Saturdays at Encinal. Evening adult swim lessons, as well as lap swim, are conducted at both swim centers.
 
BUS DRIVER ($16.75 to $22.45 per hour):
The Bus Driver will transport participants from various in-town locations to field trip excursions and other destinations. Schedules will vary. Average 30 hours a week. 

DAY CAMP LEADERS ($9.35 - $13.45) & DAY CAMP COORDINATORS ($19.39 - $22.45)
Day Camp Leaders set up camp sites, plan, organize and conduct a variety of camp activities such as: cooking, crafts, drama, music, hiking, orienteering/archery, nature lore and other duties as assigned. The Day Camp Coordinator will be directly involved in the supervision and administration of the Summer Day Camp Programs. Day Camp is an outdoor adventure providing a child the opportunity to succeed in camp related activities and to develop good relationships with others. 
 
The hours for Hidden Cove at Robert Crown Memorial State Beach Park in Alameda are approximately 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, with a Campfire Program on Thursday evenings until 8:00 p.m.; Trailblazers is a 3-day Camp, which includes an overnight; staff meeting on Tuesday evenings until 6:00 p.m. and camp set up on several weekends.

RECREATION FACILITY ASSISTANT ($11.04 - $13.45):
Recreation Facility Assistants are responsible for monitoring Alameda's recreation facilities during operation. Recreation Facility Assistants open and close facilities, maintain order of facilities, interact with the public, and answer any questions about the facility use and department policy.
 
RECREATION LEADER (Level I: $11.04 - $11.89 & Level II: $12.19 - $13.45):
Recreation Leaders plan, organize and conduct a variety of recreation programs for youth ages kindergarten through high school. Positions are available for summer and school-year programs for youth and teens. Activities include sports program, arts and crafts, cooking, dance, drama, city-wide special events and excursions. The Alameda Recreation and Park Department's goal is to provide programs which offer youth opportunities for the enrichment of the mind and body through the wholesome and creative use of leisure time. Hours may vary between 15 to 20 hours a week, depending on the position and responsibilities.
 
PROGRAM COORDINATOR (PARKS & PLAYGROUNDS/WOW) ($15.19 - $21.38)
The Program Coordinator will be directly involved in the supervision and administration of the Summer Parks, Playgrounds, and World of Wonder (WOW) Programs. The Program Coordinator assists in recruiting, selecting, training and evaluating staff, as well as having direct responsibility for conducting a number of city-wide special events. The Program Coordinator must have knowledge of a wide variety of recreation skills, work effectively with others, and prepare and maintain records and reports. Hours will range up to 40 hours per week (May 1st to September 1st) depending on programming demands. 
 
TINY TOT INSTRUCTOR ($13.22 - $16.06) & TINY TOT AIDE ($11.42 - $13.22):
The Alameda Recreation and Park Department's Small Fry/Tiny Tot Program offers sharing, cooking, arts and crafts, free play, excursions, special events, music and perceptual motor skills. Classes are available for children 3 years to 3 years, 11 months and for youth ages 4 to 5 years (pre-kindergarten). Class hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Working hours will vary with the specific assignments and are determined by class minimum enrollment. Prep time, as well as clean up time, are additional hours. Regular staff meetings are scheduled. The program is to benefit each individual child, to further his/her individual success and expand the child's self-esteem in a warm, friendly, challenging and social environment. The activities are structured to encourage social skills, motor skills and creativity. Academics are not emphasized, but included as a natural by-product of the program.
 

Employment Standards

ALL POSITIONS require current certification in American Red Cross Standard First Aid and CPR and a recent T.B. Test prior to the beginning of the program or agree to get both as a condition of being hired.

In addition to the above requirements, each position requires the following:
  • AQUATICS LIFEGUARDLifeguarding Certification, Current Title 22 First Aid or equivalent, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, WSI (preferred), and at least 16 years of age.
  • AQUATIC INSTRUCTORWSI, Current Title 22 First Aid or equivalent, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and be at least 16 years of age.
  • AQUATIC SPECIALIST: Current Title 22 First Aid or equivalent, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer. Be at least 21 years of age. Completion of two (2) years of college.  Ability to manage a staff of lifeguards and other employees. EXPERIENCE: At least two (2) years or three (3) summer seasons previous experience as a pool or beach lifeguard and swimming instructor.
  • BUS DRIVERS: Must have valid California Class B Driver's License with passenger endorsement, knowledge of traffic and highway safety rules and regulations, ability to understand and carry out instructions.
  • DAY CAMP LEADER (Three Levels):
    1. RECREATION LEARNER: Must be 16 years or older and enrolled in High School. No experience necessary. 
    2. JUNIOR CAMP LEADER: Must be 16 years or older, enrolled in High School and must have completed 160 training hours or in the first two years of college.
    3. SENIOR CAMP LEADER: Must have completed two years of College or be a High School Graduate with at least two seasons of experience as a Camp Leader.
  • DAY CAMP COORDINATOR: Applicants must have a minimum of two (2) years of education from an accredited college or university with an emphasis in Recreation or related field. Two (2) years of experience in the field or a degree in Recreation is highly desired.
  • RECREATION FACILITY ASSISTANT: Must be 16 years or older. Volunteer or Recreation Learner experience desirable.
  • RECREATION LEADER I: Must be 16 years or older. Volunteer or Recreation Learner experience desirable.
  • RECREATION LEADER II: Must have completed two years of college (junior status), be a high school graduate with at least two full years experience as a Recreation Leader I or comparable experience.
  • PROGRAM COORDINATOR (PARKS & PLAYGROUNDS/WOW): Must have a minimum of two (2) years of education from an accredited college or university with an emphasis in recreation or related field.  Two (2) years of experience in the field or a degree in Recreation is highly desired.
  • TINY TOT AIDE: Must be 18 years of age. Some Early Childhood Education or college experience is desirable. Experience working with preschool age children or school age children is also desirable.
  • TINY TOT INSTRUCTOR: Twelve post-secondary semester units or equivalent quarter units in Early Childhood Education or Child Development completed at an accredited or approved college or university and at least six months of work experience in a group child care program or preschool. The educational units specified in the above shall include courses which cover the general areas of child growth and development or human growth and development; child, family and community of child and family; or program curriculum. Experience shall be verified as having been performed satisfactorily, at least three hours per day for a minimum of 50 days in a six-month period, as a paid or volunteer staff member.

FINGERPRINTING REQUIREMENT: California State Law requires that all recreation employees and volunteers having direct contact, supervisory or disciplinary authority over minors be fingerprinted as a condition of employment. Candidates given a conditional offer of employment will be referred for fingerprinting. Employment is conditioned upon fingerprint results.

Part-time positions with the City of Alameda may be eligible for limited benefits and are considered "at-will."  Part-time employment is at the discretion of the hiring department.  Work schedules vary but may not exceed 28 hours per week.
