The Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) provides a broad range of programs, services, facilities and park amenities within the City and County of Denver. The City's park system encompasses approximately 250 urban parks, parkways and natural areas, totaling nearly 6,000 acres. The department also boasts more than 14,000 acres of pristine mountain parks, eight golf courses, 24 lakes, 73,888 trees, more than 80 miles of trails, nine off-leash dog parks and over 300 athletic fields. The recreation system includes 27 recreation centers, 16 outdoor pools and 13 indoor pools serving over one million visitors annually.

About Our Job

Utility Workers perform a variety of unskilled, routine work and light to heavy physical labor in outdoor work environments, possibly in inclement weather conditions.  This position supports various construction, maintenance, repair, and operational functions for Denver Parks & Recreation's Amenities division.  The Amenities division is responsible for Park assets such as, but not limited to:  trails and related pathways, play grounds, park structures and related park amenities.
 
These positions will report to 4495 Jason Street, Denver, CO but will work at various locations throughout the city

Job Responsibilities: 
  • Performs unskilled, light to heavy physical labor on a variety of water systems in
    accordance to department standards
  • Assists in responding to plumbing service or trouble calls, assists with troubleshooting and problem resolution
  • Assists with irrigation maintenance and installation.
  • Assist with cleaning and maintenance of decorative and interactive fountains.
  • Operates light weight equipment powered by small engines used for maintenance,
    cleaning, and minor construction projects.
  • Observes all common safety practices associated with operating small engines, hand and power tools and other work related equipment.
  • Utilizes hand operated equipment such as pipe cutters, racheting tools, hacksaw, wrenches etc.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

This is an on-call position which will work no more than 39 hours per week and is not eligible for benefits. On-call positions may have routine or variable work schedules. This position will work an average of 39 hours per week.

About You

Our ideal candidate will be a self-motivated professional who has the ability to provide guidance to less experienced workers, and will possess strong communication skills with an emphasis on safety considerations.  Enjoys working outside, enjoys working on a wide range of equipment and must be able to work holidays and weekends, as needed. Additionally, our ideal candidate will possess:

  • Experience installing irrigation pipe
  • Experience operating small hand tools such as saws, hammers, wrenches, shovels, screw drivers, trowels, tape measurers, etc.
  • Experience operating small to medium power tools such as power saws, sanders, drills, pressure washers, blowers, compressors, generators, etc.
  • Experience with preventative plumbing repair and maintenance
  • Experience with fountain maintenance
