Job Description

Responsible for assisting the Chief Technician in maintaining and repairing the City's fleet of vehicles and equipment.

 

Essential Functions

  • Performs repair service on light-duty and/or heavy-duty machinery, including landfill equipment
  • Performs mechanical work on vehicles and/or heavy equipment (gasoline, diesel, and fuel injected vehicles)
  • Performs engine tune-ups using specialized electronic test tools such as timing light and dwell meter
  • Replaces defective chassis parts, i.e., shocks, tie-rod ends, ball joint suspensions, brake shoes, wheel bearings, etc.
  • Performs complete brake overhauls, replaces shock absorbers, repairs radiator leaks, replaces clutches, etc.
  • Replaces and adjusts fuel, electrical and cooling system components
  • Performs routine preventive maintenance including fluid level checks
  • Replaces and/or rebuilds worn components
  • Monitors fuel and lubricant levels on service and lube trucks, orders product, and restocks fluid levels as required
Additional Duties:
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Three years of experience in automotive mechanical work repairing light-duty and/or heavy-duty equipment and vehicles
OR 
  • Any combination of related education, experience, certifications and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job

Conditions of Employment

  • Light duty mechanics must possess a valid Texas Class "C" driver's license prior to employment
  • Heavy duty mechanics must obtain a valid Texas Class "B" commercial driver's license within six months of employment
  • Must pass a drug test, driver's license check, criminal history background check, and social security number verification check
  • Must pass a physical examination
  • Must have own hand tools
  • Must be able to work a schedule of Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.; overtime and emergency call-in, as needed
  • May require working nights on occasion
Preferences:  
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English
  • Associate's degree in a related field and/or National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (A.S.E.) Certifications in at least four areas
  • One year of experience in repair of hydraulic systems/components
  • Good working knowledge of internal combustion engines and electrical systems
  • Skill in diagnosing equipment malfunctions
  • Knowledge of procedures and skills to operate equipment used in diagnostics, repairs/services and maintenance of motorized equipment
  • Experience repairing buses
