The Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) provides a broad range of programs, services, facilities and park amenities within the City and County of Denver. The City's park system encompasses approximately 250 urban parks, parkways and natural areas, totaling nearly 6,000 acres. The department also boasts more than 14,000 acres of pristine mountain parks, eight golf courses, 24 lakes, 73,888 trees, more than 80 miles of trails, nine off-leash dog parks and over 300 athletic fields. The recreation system includes 28 recreation centers, 16 outdoor pools and 14 indoor pools serving over one million visitors annually

About Our Job

Utility Workers - East perform a variety of unskilled, routine work and light to heavy physical labor in outdoor work environments, possibly in inclement weather conditions.  This position supports various construction, maintenance, repair, and operational functions for  East Denver Parks & Recreation's network of parks and facilities.

Job Responsibilities: 
  • Performs unskilled, light to heavy physical labor involving physical exertion and the use of various hand-powered tools and motorized equipment
  • Assists skilled trade workers by performing minor repairs to buildings and facilities including painting, plastering, carpentry, plumbing repairs, and simple elements of electrical systems such as replacing faulty switches and outlets.
  • Performs minor repairs to gardening and grounds equipment, vehicles, and machinery including repair or replacement of broken parts
  • Performs pre-trip inspection on equipment for such things as fluid levels, leaks, condition of hoses and belts, tire pressure, brake lights, and related areas and secures, cleans and cares for all tools and equipment needed for job assignments.
  • Places and removes barricades, cones, and other traffic control and safety devices in and around work areas
  • Performs landscape maintenance duties including laying sod, fertilizing, mowing and edging fields and lawn areas, spading dirt, pruning shrubs, planting trees and shrubs, raking leaves, watering assigned areas, picking up litter, and clearing dumpster areas
  • Observes all common safety practices
  • By position, performs snow removal and operations duties such as snow plowing, salting, and removal of ice and snow
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

This is an on-call position which will work no more than 39 hours per week and is not eligible for benefits. On-call positions may have routine or variable work schedules. This position will work an average of 39 hours per week.

About You

Our ideal candidate will be a self-motivated professional who is able to guide less-experienced employees, and will possess strong communication skills with an emphasis on safety considerations.  Enjoys working outside, enjoys working on a wide range of equipment and must be able to work holidays and weekends, as needed.

  • Various maintenance, motorized equipment, and hand powered tool experience
  • 2 years (or 2 peak seasons) or more of Parks Maintenance experience
