Description

This position will serve as Inclusion Counselor for our Track Out camps and other year-round programs.   Inclusion Counselors work with persons with disabilities, helping them to be integrated into our programs.  These positions will work Monday - Friday during camp hours. Camp hours are 7:30 a.m.until 6:00 p.m., but each individual counselor's schedule will be determined by the particular assignment and setting. 

Some training hours may occur during the evenings or on Saturdays.

Supervises and assists participants who have disabilities during camps. Interacts with parents, care providers and service providers of persons with disabilities throughout the community.
 
Specific duties may vary depending upon assignment.
 
Work is performed under the general supervision of the Specialized Recreation & Inclusion Supervisor. 

Requires a passion for providing caring, excellent customer service while interacting with co-workers and our citizens.

Typical Tasks

Assists in program planning and actively participates as well as engages all participants in activities;
Supervises and assists participants with disabilities in track out camps;
Modifies activities as needed, or provides reasonable accommodations for participation;
Implements participant inclusion plan recommendations (inclusion services);
Assists participants with personal care activities – toileting, dressing, hygiene, management of belongings and/or medication (specialized recreation services);
Monitors participants for safety and address behavior concerns;
Documents and/or relays accident/incident information to the appropriate staff;
Communicates effectively with coworkers, parents/guardians, care providers and supervisors;
Maintains and completes appropriate paperwork for Specialized Recreation programs, as well as Inclusion Services;
Attends and participates in all required trainings and staff meetings;
Performs other job-related tasks as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Prior experience working with persons who have disabilities; general knowledge of planning and implementing programs for persons with disabilities; general knowledge of equipment and supplies required for programs; ability to develop and make activity adaptations and modifications for a variety of disabilities; ability to work effectively and to communicate effectively with persons of all ages and all ability levels; ability to take initiative and exercise sound judgment and leadership when dealing with activities, behaviors and safety of all participants; ability to drive a 15 passenger van if needed; ability to organize and schedule time; general knowledge of computers and related software; general knowledge of standard office practices and procedures.

Minimum and Preferred Qualifications

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in therapeutic recreation, general recreation, physical education or related field, and prior experience working in programs serving persons with disabilities.

Prefer CPR/First Aid Certification. If not currently certified, requires completion of certification upon hire.

Requires possession of a valid driver's license and acceptable driving history.

Requires drug testing and background check (which may include criminal check, education and credit history review) prior to employment.
